THE NORRIS PETERS can. wAsnmnrvu, o. c.
UNITED STATES @FFTCE.
JAMES MALLON, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
HORSE-POWER.
T0 at whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, Laws MALLON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Or leans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Powers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in horse-powers, and has for its primary object to provide a drum and sweep mounted to revolve independently of each other, with means for interlocking said drum and sweep and means for braking said drum, with operating-levers for said means carried by said sweep and extending to positions adjacent the seat for the operative carried by the sweep.
WVhile the invention is not limited to the specific construction disclosed, for the purpose of more clearly understanding the invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating a .practical embodiment of same, the novel features of which will be more succinctly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View in side elevation, a portion of the sweep being broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view, portions of the sweep and drum being broken away; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the lower bearing and hollow shaft.
1 is a framework provided, as is customary, with runners for dragging the horsepower to different positions, 2 designating upright standards for supporting the guidingroller 3 for the cable 1.
5 is a vertical hollow shaft rigidly secured, as by the clamping means 6, to the crossbeams 1 of the frame. 7 is the windingdrum, revolubly mounted on said hollow shaft 5. At the lower end of the drum there is preferably provided an annular flange 8 for preventing the cable from slipping down when slack. The upper end of the drum is provided with the peripherally-notched top flange member 9, which in the drawings 1s illustrated as forming the top plate of the drum, projecting beyond the periphery of the drum and provided with the notches or recesses 9 for a purpose hereinafter referred to.
10 designates the sweep, provided with a seat 10 on its short arm. This sweep is rev- Specification of Letters Patent.

olubly mounted on the upper end of the hol low shaft 5 by means of the ournal-bearing having the upper and lower plates 11 11 the lower plate 11 adapted to rest on a spacingcollar 12, interposed between the sweep and the drum.
13 is a sliding bolt carried by the lever 14, pivotally supported, as at 15, by the sweep. This sliding bolt is mounted adjacent to and cooperates with the notches 9 and forms a portion of the means for interlocking the drum to the sweep.
16 is an angle-plate carried by the sweep for guiding and limiting the movement-0f the sliding bolt, and 16 is an angle-plate to limit the upward'movement of the sweep.
17 designates a braking-band encircling the drum below the flange 8, one end of the band being secured, as by the angle-plate 18, to one of the cross-beams 1 The other end of the braking-band is connected, as by the tightening-bolt 19, with the end of an operating cable or chain 20, reeving over a pulley 21, supported by the bearing 22, thence passing downwardly and reeving below a suitably-supported pulley 23, thence passing laterally oi the frame, (as at 20, Fig. 2,) thence passing below a suitably-journaled pulley 24, (shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2,) said pulley mounted adj accnt the lower end of the hollow shaft 5, and finally passing upwardly through said hollow shaft (as at 20 Fig. 1) and connected, preferably by a swivel, to the short arm of an operating-lever 25, suitably supported, as by the bearing 26, on the plate 1 l. as the lever 14 extends adjacent the seat for the operative.
It will be understood that the lateral ear 17 on the braking-band is bored to loosely re- It will be seen that this lever 25, as well ccive the bolt 19, which is adjusted by means of the nuts 19 thus forming means for taking up the slack of the brake.
From the foregoing description the operation is obvious, it being seen that the operating-levers are in easy control of the operative, so that the drum may be readily interlocked to the sweep or released therefrom and when released the drum being under control of the braking mechanism.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a horse-power, the combination with a vertical hollow shaft, of a drum and sweep carried by said shaft and independently revoluble relatively to each other, means for interlocking and releasing said sweep and drum, a brake at the lower end of said drum, an operating-handle for said brake supported by said sweep, flexible means passing through said hollow shaft and connecting said handle with said brake, and means carried by said sweep for operating said interlocking means, substantially as described.
2. In a horse-power, the combination with a hollow vertical shaft, of a drum and a sweep mounted to revolve independently thereon, a peripherally-notched member carried by said drum, a locking-bolt carried by said sweep adj acent said peripherally-notched member and means for operating said bolt into and out of engagement therewith, a brake-band encircling the lower end of said JAMES lVlALLON.
