CAR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,847, dated September 13, 1887,

Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS FANEUFF, of
. Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oar-Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car-brakes which are preferably applicable to cars for streetrailways, but which can be applied to passenger and freight cars of steamrailroads; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device for the purposes above set forth. This object I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which is herein referred to and forms part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a platformcar provided with my invention, showing the brake-shoes out of contact with the car-wheels; Fig. 2, a like elevation showing the brakeshoes in contact with the car-wheels; Fig. 3, an inverted plan view, and Fig. 4 a side elevation, of part of a car, showing a modification of my invention as adapted to operating the brake mechanism at or near the middle of the car.
As represented in the drawings,A is the floor or platform of a car, which may be constructed in any preferred form and manner, and B the car-wheels secured to the axles b, which are fitted to revolve in the boxes 0; D, brake-levers, which are bifurcated and spread laterally to be fulcrumed in hangers E, which are in proximity to the car-wheels B. The inner end of said levers are brought nearly together at a point that is near the center of the floor of the car and intermediate to the car-axles b. The outer ends of said brake-levers are made in the form of cranks d, to which the brakeshoes F are pivoted.
The contiguous inner ends of the brake-levers D are connected by links G to a shackle, H, so that both of said levers will have a simultaneous movement, and each of said levers is connected to separate weights I by chains J, which pass over sheaves j,(shown in dotted lines in the drawings,) the said Weights being fitted to slide with perfect freedom on guides K. By this arrangement the inner ends of the brake-levers D will be normally held by the action of the weights I at the highest point of Serial No. 236,310. (No model.)

At each end of the platform A a foot-piece, L, is fitted to. slide easily in a guide, M, and each foot-piece is connected to the shackle H by a chain,N, that is carried over guide-sheaves n, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
My invention as just described can be operated from either end of the car, and its op eration is as follows: The brakeshoes F being out of contact with the car-wheels B,as shown in Fig. 1, to apply the brakes it is necessary to apply the pressure of the foot-piece L to depress the latter, as shown in Fig. 2, and thereby the chain N, that is connected to the depressed foot-piece, is drawn down to produce a corresponding movement of the shackle H and the inner ends of the brake-levers D, whereby the cranks d are moved to bring the brake-shoes F into frictional contact with the car-wheels B. Simultaneously with the movements just described the weights I are drawn up to the highest point of their movement. On the releasement of the foot-piece L from the applied pressure the weights I will raise the inner ends of the brake-levers D to their normal position, thereby releasing the brake-shoes F from contact with the carwheels B, and the foot-piece L will be carried by the chain N back to its former position.
When preferred, the usual vertical shafts with hand-cranks, or the ordinary operating levers, may be substituted for the sliding footpieces L as a means for operating my brake mechanism.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the footpieces L at the ends of the car are dispensed with. A foot-presser, L, is connected directly to the shackle H, and by depressing said foot presser, the inner ends of the brake-levers D are forced downward to operate the brakeshoes F,in the manner hereinabove described. This last-described form of my brake mechan ism is especially designed for use on cable railways, and when so used the foot-presser L' should be located in easy reach of the gripman, who can then have both hands at liberty for operating the grip-levers.
I claim as my invention 1. In a car-brake, the combinatiomwith the brake-levers D, whose inner ends are connected to a shackle, H, and whose onter ends are provided with cranks d, to which the brake-shoes vided with cranks d, to which the brakeshoes F are pivoted, and the weights I, fitted to slide F are pivoted, and the weights I, fitted to slide on guides K, and connected by chains Jto the p on guides K, and connected by chains J to the inner ends of the brake-1evers D, of a foot- I 5 5 inner end of the brake-levers D, of the footpiece or presser connected to the shackle H, as
