Description

Aug. 9, 1960 R. i. KALLMAN ET 2,948,575 I DISPENSING CONTAINER FOR SHEET WRAPPING MATERIAL Filed Aprii 19, 1956 IN V EN TORS. Rober/l. Ka//man Thomas M. .S/e/nbach Robe/f F. Sf'om/ng nrrolmgvs United States Patent 2,948,575 DISPENSING CONTAINER FOR SHEET WRAPPING MATERIAL Robert I. Kallman, Geneva, and Thomas M. Steinbach, Park Ridge, 11]., and Robert F. Stoming, Hammond, Ind., assignors to The Dow Chemical Company, Mid land, Mich., a corporation of Delaware Filed Apr. 19, 1956, Ser. No. 579,267 6 Claims. (Cl. 312-39) This invention relates to an improved dispensing container or carton for sheet material, particularly plastic film and the like for wrapping purposes, which is packaged in wound rolls that are provided in the container. More particularly, this invention relates to a dispensing container having a means for preventing recoil of the withdrawn exposed portion of the sheet or film material stored therein.
The conventional dispenser cartons in which relatively small rolls of waxed paper, plastic film, metal foil and other commonly employed wrapping materials are packaged for domestic and analogous uses are not ordinarily adapted to prevent recoil or feed back of the withdrawn sheet into the container after a desired length has been severed from the roll on the associated cutting strip which is usually provided near the Outlet of such containers.
It would be advantageous to provide an improved dispensing container for rolls of sheet wrapping material, particularly plastic film, having integrally associated therewith a simple, positive and eflicient means for preventing the recoil of sheet material after it has been withdrawn from the supply roll. This result and other advantages and benefits may be realized in accordance with the present invention which comprises, in combination with a wound supply package of sheet wrapping material, a core for supporting said woung package having a ratcheted end, a container for receiving said supply package having an outlet through which sheet material from the supply package is dispensed, and a pawl tab positioned in said container transverse to said core to abut against the ratcheted end of said core thereby limiting the rotatability of said supply package for withdrawal of sheet material therefrom to the single direction permitted by said incorporated ratchet arrangement.
Further features and advantages of the present invention will be manifest in the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective View of a supply package wound on a core having a ratcheted end for employment in the practice of the invention;
Figure 2 is a broken out plan view, partly in section, of a container in accordance with the present invention; and
Figure 3 is a broken out front elevation partly in section of the container.
In Figure l of the accompanying drawing there is shown in a fragmentary perspective view a supply package, indicated generally by the reference numeral 4, of sheet wrapping material 12 wound in roll form about a suitable core 5 having a notched or ratcheted end 6. The wound roll is adapted to be placed in an accommodating container, indicated generally by the reference numeral 7, as shown in the fragmentary, broken-out plan and elevation views of Figures 2 and 3, respectively. The end wall 8A of the container 7 has a pawl tab 9 affixed interiorly thereto. The pawl tab 9 abuts against the ratcheted end 6 of the core 5 which is thrust against or maintained in engagement with the tab through the influence on the core of the opposite end 8B of the container. This may be facilitated by utilizing suitable rela- Patented Aug. 9, 1960 tive dimensions for the length of the container 7 and that of the core 5. Advantageously, the pawl tab 9 extends completely across the ratcheted end 6 of the core 5 and is positioned to about intersect its axis: of rotation. Although the pawl tab 9 may extend radially in any desired direction, it is beneficial for it to be disposed substantially at a right angle to the withdrawing direction of the sheet material from the supply package through the outlet 10, which may advantageously have a suitable cutting strip 11 provided coextensive therewith. Such disposition of the pawl tab relative to the sheet outlet tends to retain the supply package more firmly in the container during unwinding of the roll.
As is apparent, the ratchet arrangement of the present invention prevents recoil of the withdrawn sheet material to insure that an extending portion of the sheet will remain in an accessible position near the container outlet after a desired length has been withdrawn and severed from the roll. In addition, it does not complicate the inserting operations when placing the wound roll in the container, since a precise or critical relative positioning is not required between the core and the pawl tab in order to achieve advantageous results. It also assists in obtaining a better cutting or tearing action of the sheet material withdrawn from the package on the cutting means that may be associated with the container.
Dispensing containers in accordance with the invention may be employed with particular advantage for plastic wrapping films such as those which are comprised of copolymers of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride which may frequently be generically characterized as being Sarans and which enjoy widespread popularity and have great favor as a wrapping material for domestic and other uses.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination, a wound supply package of sheet wrapping material, a hollow, cylindrical core for supporting said package having a longitudinally extending, ratcheted end with axially olfset teeth, a container having side and end walls that closely accommodate said supply package, said container being adapted toreceive said supply package and support it therein upon and against said walls, said container having an outlet through which sheet material from the supply package is dispensed, and a pawl tab positioned in said container transverse to the axis of said core to extend into and abut against the ratcheted end of said core between said axially offset teeth thereon.
2. The combination of claim 1, wherein the pawl tab extends completely across the ratcheted end of the core.
3. The combination of claim 1, wherein the pawl tab extends completely across the ratcheted end of the core and is positioned to intersect the axis of rotation of the core.
4. The combination of claim 1, wherein the pawl tab is disposed substantially at a right angle to the withdrawing direction of the sheet material through said dispensing outlet.
5. The combination of claim 1, wherein said sheet wrapping material is a plastic film.
6. The combination of claim 1, wherein said pawl tab extends from and is an integral part of one of the end walls of said container adjacent the ratcheted end of said core.
