SANDAL Kiyoichi Miyachi, '408-1 Mikado-macht, Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Iapan The present invention relates to a sandal comprising a pair of side straps made of two strips cut from a sock liner and extending outwardly from each side of the sock liner at the rear end of the latter to be thereupon united into a front strap which is secured to the middle part of the adjoining outsole.

The invention will be described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of the sandal;

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the sandal;

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the front strap and a transverse section through the sock liner, insole and outsole of the sandal; and Y Fig. 4 is an enlarged section through a sidestrap, and through portions of the sock liner, insole and outsole of the sandal.

Referring now in greater detail to the drawing, and tirst to Figs. =1 and 2, there is shown a` sandal whose sock liner 3 consists of an upper layer 1 made of a l plastic material, e.g. vinyl chloride or the like, cloth or rubber, and of a backing 2 made of rubber, cloth or other suitable material. Insole 4 and outsole 5 are made of'sponge rubber or another suitable material; they constitute a composite sole 6.

An important feature of the sandal is in that the straps consist'of the same material as the sock liner and in that the front strap, surrounded by the wrapping material 14, is split at its lower end and secured to the outsole whereby any slackening and tearing of the straps is prevented. 'Ihe sandal is quite strong and comfortable, its appearance is pleasing to the eyeV and it may be made in any desired color. The iront strap cannot harm the inner sides of toes as it is surrounded by the wrapping material. If sponge rubber is employed as the material of outsole 5, the sandal becomes very light and absorbs water. lf rubber is also employed as the material of backing 2, the bond between the backing and the insole on the one hand, and between the backing and the ends of

9, 10 on the other hand, is improved; therefore, any separation of the insole from the sock liner is very unlikely. A plastic material may be employed in summer and a uty woolen cloth may be used in winter for Athe sock liner; accordingly, the sandal of my invention ispractical, of pleasing appearance, very comfortable, suitable for Wear in any season of the year, and may be mass-produced at low cost.

l claim:

A sandal comprising, in combination: an insole having an opening; and outsole below said insole; a sock liner covering said insole and having a slit above said opening; a .pair of strips integral with and each extending from Vone outer side of said sock liner adjacent to the latters rear end, said strips being twisted and turned over to form a pair of side straps of the sandal and being connected to each other to form a front strap having a lower end portion received in said slit, and each of said strips having a free end bent into the plane of said insole and received in the opening therein; and means for connecting the free ends of said strips to the outsole and for connecting the sock liner to said insole.
