Description

G. GUIFFRE Jan. 17, 1933.
S ANDAL Filed Oct. 14, 1951 Patented Jan. 17", 1933 PATENT OFFICE GAETANO GUIFFRE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA SANDAL Application filed October 14, 1931. .Serial No. 588,803.
The present invention relates to sandals and has for its purpose to provide a light weight sandal or slipper of extremely simple and economical construction which may be made from a single sheet of material.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a sandal having heel and toe engaging portions which are secured to each other in a manner. that will firmly hold the sandal to the foot to the end that the same may be worn indoors and out of doors at all times, and for relieving the foot of the pressure and strain incident to wearing the usual Walking shoe. Summarily stated, it is the essential purpose of the invention to provide a one-piece sandal which may in all respects be substituted for the present type of foot gear both for ordinary wear and for bathing.
A still further purpose of the invention is the provision of a one-piece sandal-preferably constructed of leatherhaving adjustable foot fastening means whereby one sandal of any given size or style is adaptable 2 to the requirements of many sizes, to the end that a serviceable or comfort-able sandal may be provided with a minimum of parts and little expense. To this end it will be obvious that the manufacturer, and likewise the dealer, may limit the making and selling of the sandal to a reasonably restricted number of styles or sizes inasmuch as any given style or size is adapted to satisfy the requirements of an appreciably wide range of fittings through the provision of the novel adjustment feature.
The present invention contemplates making the sandal of leather material, though it will be understood the same may be made of rubber, canvas, or other suitable fabric.
Further objects and advantages of the invention, and purposes relating to details and arrangements of parts will be readily apparent in the course of the detailed description following.
The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of the sandal in its lay flat condition.
Figure 2 a perspective view of the sandal in shape for wearing, and;
Figure 3 shows a sectional view of the sandal attaching means.
Referring 'to the construction in further detail and wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the different views, the sandal consists of a sole por' tion 6 of suitable pliable material, prefer-. ably leather, having heelportions 7 and a toe portion 7a. The sole and heel portions may be of uniform thickness throughout or the heel portion 7 may be of greater thickness than the sole proper. For instance, an extra thickness may be attached to the wearing surface of the heel portion. Suitable means are provided for securely holding the sandal to the foot of the wearer at the toe and heel portions, and said attaching devices are preferably formed integral with the sole of the sandal as a unitary structure and all in one and the same piece in the course of manufacture.
The toe attaching device comprises a pocket-like portion formed of two side pieces or straps 8 and 9 slitted as at 10 and 11 to receive the elongated strap portion 12 that extends medially of the foot and from the toe tip 13 to a position approximately adjacent the instep portion of the foot.
The heel engaging portion of the sandal comprises a pair of side portions 14 and 15 similar to the side members 8 and 9 and in like manner provided with slitted portions 16 and 17 through which-are laced the strap portions 18 and 19 formed integral and continuous with the heel engaging portion 20. Said heel engaging portion 20 is appreciably large or coextensive in width with the heel proper as shown in Figure 1. Said strap porac tions 18 and 19 extend from the rear-most edge thereof and in a substantially straight and continuous line, and lace through the slits 16 and 17 of the side members 14 and 15, continuous about the upper foot portion or ankle of the wearer. The strap member 18 laces through the slits 20 of the terminal portion 21 of the strap 12 as shown in Figure 2. A. suitable buckle or other fastening device 22 carried by the strap member 19 is adapted to have adjustable engagement with-the apertured end portion 23 of the instep strap portion 18.
It will therefore be seen that the sandal herein described is made up of the minimum amount of material, is produced in lay-flat condition, is readily adjustable to conform to the foot as shown in Figure 2; has the leastpossible weight on the wearer, and thereby contributes to give maximum comfort during walking, and in like manner swimming, The sandal will remain firmly on the foot without discomfort from perspiration, and due to the novel form of foot attaching means, there is ample ventilation entirely around the foot, and while swimming there is the least possible hindrance to action inasmuch as there is complete avoidance of water pockets but on the other hand effective shedding of water.
It will be understood that the invention as herein disclosed is not limited to the details of construction shown and described as these may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the claim.
What is claimed as new is:
A sandal comprising a sole portion, a heel portion extending upwardly from the rear edge of the sole portion,v ankle encircling strap portions formed integrally with and extending forwardly from the upper end of the heel portion, means connecting the free ends of the strap portions together, other heel portions spaced forwardly from said first heel portion and extending upwardly from the side edges of the sole portion, said other heel portions being provided at their upper ends with slits through'whichthe strap portions pass, a toe portion extending upwardly and rearwardly from the front edge of the sole portion, a strap portion extending rearwardly and upwardly from the toe portion and provided at its upper end with slits through which'one of said first named strap portions passes, and other toe portions spaced rearwardly from said first named toe portion and extending upwardly and inwardly from the side edges of the sole portion with their inner ends arranged in overlapping relation, said overlapping ends having slits through which passes the strap portion carried by said first named toe portion, the heel and toe portions being formed integrally with the sole portion.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
GAETANO GUIFFRE.
