The present invention relates to foot coverings and in particular to an open sandal retained on the foot by straps.

An object of the present invention is to provide a sandal of the type which is held on the foot by straps which lends itself to -tting almost every size of foot.

Another object of the present invention is to provide -a sandal of the type held on the foot by straps which is economical to produce, one having a novel feature of adjustability to many sizes of feet, and one which is attractive in appearance and highly effective in action.

These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent upon consideration of the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawing in which is shown a preferred embodiment of the present invention, and in which:

FIGURE 1 is a plan View of the sandal o-f the present invention,

FIGURE 2 is a view taken on the line 2 2 of FIG- URE l with the outline of a human foot in position on the sandal, the foot being of one size,

FIGURE 3 is a View similar to FIGURE 2 with the sandal shown tted to a foot of a larger size, and

FIGURE 4 is a view taken on the line 44 of FIG- URE 1.

With reference to the drawing in detail, the sandal of the present invention includes a sole member having an upper face 12 and a lower face 14. The sole member 10 has an outer side edge 16 and an inner side edge 18, the side edges being spaced from each other.

Extending from the inner side edge 18 to the outer side edge 16 is a vamp strap 20, fabricated of resilient material so that it may stretch Within reasonable bounds.

The invention further includes a toe strap 22 having one end portion formed to a loop 24 which receives and is circumposed about a mid-part of the vamp strap 20.

Longitudinally of the upper face 12 of the sole member 10 is an elongated knurled recess 26 in whioh is received the portion of the toe strap 22 adjacent the other end, as shown most clearly in FIGURE 2.

A rivet 28 extends from a recess 30 in the lower vface 14 of the sole member It) upwardly into the rearward end of the recess 26 and through the end portion of the toe strap 22 to secure the toe strap 22 to the sole mem ber 10.

A heel 32 is shown secured to the lower face 14 of the sole member 10 yadjacent the rearward end of the latter, although the heel 32 may be omitted if desired.

`In a preferred form of the invention the sole member 10 is fabricated of two thicknesses of resilient material such -as plastic, rubber, or the like, the two thicknesses of material being designated by the

numerals

Preferably the ends of the vamp strap are secured between the

thioknesses

34 and 36 of the sole member 10 by cementing, vulcanizing, or in any other way found suitable. It is yalso possible to form the vamp strap out of a continuous loop so that it has a portion between' the

sole member thicknesses

In use, as shown in FIGURE 2, a human foot 38 o1 a certain size may be accommodated on the `sole member `10 with the toe strap 22 passing between the lai-gf toe and lthe adjacent toe, the large toe being showt broken away in FIGURE 2.

In FIGURE 3 a larger foot 40 is shown also accom modated on the sole member 10 with the toe strap 2i passing between the first and second toes.

A comparison of FIGURE 2 with FIGURE 3 wil show that for the smaller foot a shorter end portion o: the toe strap 22 remains in the recess 26 while'with th larger foot the toe strap 22 occupies nearly the whol length of the recess 26.

A feature of the invention is that both the toe straI 22 and the vamp strap 20 are fabricated of resilient ma -terial permitting them to stretch to lit every si-Ze foo within reasonable balance.

While only a preferred form of the invention is showt other embodiments of the invention are contemplate( and numerous changes and modifications may be made therein without departing `from lthe spirit of the inven tion as set forth in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. In a sandal including a sole member having an uppe: face and a lower face and spaced inner and outer sid: edges, and `a vamp strap extending over said upper fac from the inner side edge to the outer side edge, a tot strap having a loop on one end circumposed about a mid portion of said vamp strap, the portion of said toe stra] 'adjacent the other end being received in an elongate( recess provided in said sole member upper face, an( fastening means extending from the lower face of sai( member into said recess adjacent one end of the latte: and securing said strap other end portion to the botton of said recess.

2. The sandal vaccording to claim 1 in which the vam] strap is resilient.

3. The sandal according to claim 1 in which the tor strap is resilient.

4. The sandal according to claim l in which both tbl toe strap and the vamp strap are resilient.

5. In a sandal including a sole member having a1 upper face and a lower face, spaced inner and outer sid edges, and -a toe portion, a vamp strap fabricated of re silient materi-al extending over said upper face from thi inner side edge to the outer side edge and having its end xed to said sole member, a toe strap having a loop o1 one end circumposed about a mid-portion of said vani] strap, the portion of said toe strap adjacent the othe: end being received in an elongated recess provided i1 said sole member upper face, said recess extending longi tudinally of said sole member, and fastening means ex tending from the lower face of said sole member int( said recess adjacent the end remote from said toe portion and securing said -toe strap other end portion to the bot tom of said recess.
