' Vnovel means whereby a smooth, uniform crowned joint 5 The flange 9 is integral with the smoothing blade or with feathered edges may be expeditiously produced with unskilled or semi-skilled labor.
Another important object of the present invention 1s to provide a wallboard joint finishing tool of the character described comprising a scraping blade and a smoothing blade or shoe, wherein said smoothing blade or shoe may be readily adjusted as desired.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a wallboard joint finishing tool of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact,` of light weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
' These together with otherV objects and `advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which: l
Figure 1 is a View in front elevation of a finishing to'ol co'nstructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the device in use;
Figure 2 isga view in horizontal section through the wall structure, showing the tool in bottom plan; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring now .to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a scraping blade 4 of suitable metal, which blade may also be of any desired dimensions. The blade 4 terminates in angularly bent, downwardly diver gent end portions 5 providing handles having secured on one of the longitudinal edges thereof grips 6 of substantially U-shaped cross-section. Between the end portions 5 thereof, the blade 4 is provided withV a concave scraping edge 7.
shoe 8 and` extends at right angles therefrom. Slots v11 in the flange 9 receive the bolts 10 and permit adjustment of the blade 8 on the blade 4.
It is thought that the use of the to'ol will be readilyV apparent from a considerationY of the foregoing. Y Briefly, the mud Vorv mastic 12 is applied to the work, as indicatedat 13, in the usual manner. The blade 4 is then engaged transversely with the Work in a manner to bridge the joint, the operator holding the grips 6 in the hands. The device is then drawn over the work substantially in the manner o'f a drawknife, the concave scraping edge 7 of the blade 4 uniformly distributing the mastic in addition to crowning and feathering the joint. Excess mastic accumulates on the blade 4. The arcuate trailing blade 8 smoothes the joint. The angularly extending end portions 5 of the -blader 4 ride on the work on opposite sides of the joint and stabilize said blade, preventing the same fro'm rocking, etc. By loosening the nuts 14 on the bolts 10, the smoothing bladeor shoe 8 may be adjusted as desired relative to the scraping edge 7.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is ndt desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may beresorted to falling Within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A wallboard joint finishing tool comprising: a blade engageable transversely with the joint 'and including a concave arcuate, bottom scraping edge, said blade further including angularly extending, forwardly divergent end portions providing operating handles and operable on the wall on opposite sides of the joint fo'r stabilizing said blade, an arcuate smoothing `shoe for the joint` References Cited in the tile of this patent UNITED STATES PTENTS 1,220,986 Henderson Mar. 27, 1917 1,564,172 BuSCh DCC. 1, 1925 2,301,498 Ames -.r- NOV. 10, 1942 2,693,136
