COMBINED SOFA AND BATH-TUB.
' sr scrrrcnrron forming part of Letters Iatent a... 294,460, ha March 4, 1884.
Application filed March 19,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..- a Be itknown that I, GILBERT E. GA Nun,- a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Kisco, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Sofa and Bath-Tub; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to ,make-and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Figure 1 of the drawings is a front View of w my sofa. Fig. 2is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the same. Fig. 4. isa. vertical sectional view of the boiler. This invention has relation to baths; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement'of' a bath-tub in the body portion of a sofa under a removable seat, and in providing in conmction therewith a water-tank and a boiler, all "ts hereinafter set forth. v In the accomparyingdrawings, the letter A 1 designates the body-frame of the sofa, and B its back. In the body-frame is seated and supported a metallic bob, 0; or a wooden'bathtub may go lined with thin metal.
D represents a lid or cover for the tub G, which is designed to rest upon the marginal portion of the frame A, and is usually formed with an under projection, e, which is designed 5 to t within the-upper portion of the tub, and serves to hold the cover or seat in place thereon. The cover D may be upholstered, as indicated at F, the springs resting on the cover. The backB and arm G of the sofa 40 may also be upholstered, so that the sofa will .-form a handsome and convenient article of.
' furniture when not in use as a bath.
H indicates an elongated tank of metal,-
' which is connected to the back 13 of the sofa, being usually seated in an elongated recess, K, in the back, so that it is out ofsight when the sofa is placed against the wall. From the tank a pipe, a, extends into the bath-tub, ter.
be constructed in the body-frame and minating in' a faucet, 12. From the reservoir extend two pipes, c and c, oneat a higher level than the .other, said pipes being designed to provide means of communication with the boiler, respectively, as shown at land-*1" This boiler is designed to heat the water in. the tank in a rapid manner. It consistsjin a hollow or double-wall skirt-cylinder, m,"a?,se:-: ries of double-wall cones, n, one. above an other, withiu'the skirt-cylinder, and a larger double-wall cone, d, located above the smaller cones, and spreading over the top'of the skirtcylinder. The cones and cylinder are boiler-sections, and they are connectedto each other by means of short pipes or passages in the following manner: From the apex of each cone-chamber ashort passage,p, extends upward to the central portion of the concave. bottom of the cone next above it. The apex pipe 9 of the large. or top cone. chamber is designed to be connected to the upper pipe 0 of the tank. From the cen- 7o tral or highest portionof the bottom of the lower cone extends a pipe, 0, which is connected to the lower pipe, 0, of the tank.
The boiler is designed to beheated by means ofan ordinary oil-stove, and rapidly heats the Water in thereservoir ortank, which circulates through the boiler. I f
When the bath is not in use, the boiler maybe removed, and the seat or cover D having been placed on the bath-tub, the sofa bath becomes an ordinary article of furniture.
It is not intended that the boiler shown and described should be claimed inthe 'present application, as any ordinary tank or boil- 8 .er may be used instead; but the right is herein reserved to makca separate future application therefor.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A sofa and bathtub combined, vwherein the bath-tub is located and supported in the body-frame of thesofa, and the seat thereof Y,
forms a cover for the bathtub, concealing it 5 from view, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a sofa having a I I In testimony whereof I afiis my signature in bath-tub in i s body portion, and aremovahle presence of two witnesses. seat, of a, water tank or reservoir attached tothe hack of the'sofmsnbstantially as specified. GILBERT E. GA NUN.
3. The combination, with a sofa having a bath-tub and water -tank provided with a faucet extending into the tnb,of awater-heating attachment, substantially as specified.
