1v1. DAKIN. 'NECK YOKE.
No. 294,447. i Patented Mar. 4, 1884.
.Attori-Ley UNITED STATES MONTGOMERY DAKIN,
'NECK- OF LESLIE, MICHIGAN.
YOKE.
SPECIFICTION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,447, dated March 4', 1884.
Application filed July 12, 1883.
fication, reference being hadtherein to the accompanying drawings. v
My invention relates to neck-yok'es; and it consists in the parts which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of a neck-yoke provided with my improvement. central cross-section. Fig. Sis a partial longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the truss-plates as4 used on a carriage or a buggy pole, said plates being provided with depressions to admit yoke-straps to pass under them. y
Like letters indicate like parts in the views. A is the whifiietree.v
B B are two truss-plates secured to the whiffletree. These truss plates lap at thecenter of the neck-yoke, and they are provided with end hooks, B B.
O O are ferrules provided with the offset O C. rIhe hook ends of the truss-plates are secured to the ferrules. ASaid ends lie within Fig. 2 is a the depressions on the under side of the projections O', and the ends B/ lap over` said projections, thereby securing the ferrules, which will be more fully hereinafter specified.
D is a ring provided with a depression,D and a right-angled twist, D.
E is a cap-plate provided with a curved part, E. In the part E a groove, El, is formed, to admit the curved part D of the ring. The under ring, D2, is adapted to receive the ends of the pole.
F is a plate on the upper part of the whifiletree. Said plate is provided with an enlarged part, F', the part F having a groove, F2, therein to admit the ring. G G are bolts,
which pass through the two upper plates, thence through the neck-yoke, and then through the lapped ends ofthe truss-plates.
(No model.)
G are nuts on said bolts.
H H are depressions in the plates to admit the yoke-strap on carriage or buggy harness.
The truss-plates serve a twofold purposethey strengthen the neck-yoke and secure the ferrules.
The appliances may be attached to a whiffletree without departing from the spirit of my invention. henY so used, the truss-plates would forni a rub-iron to prevent the wheel from wearing the whifiletree.
It will be observed that by the arrangement of parts as shown a farmer can easily iron a yoke without mechanical assistance. The lower ring in carriage or buggy yokes is to be wound with leather through, beginning at top and winding to top, where both ends are secured with twisted wire. The lower ring of carriage or buggy yokes may be covered with leather vand stretched thereto properly, having hole for reception of pole. This leather of course prevents wear on end of pole. Y
By having .the depression or curve D in the ring said ring conforms to the upper plates and prevents the yoke from revolving in the ring. A
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In aneck-yoke or whiflletree, truss-plates provided with end hooks, and ferrules having offset to admit the plates, as specified, in combination with bolts wherebyl said plates are secured to the whifletree, substantially as set forth.
2. The plates E and F, having the depresf sions `adapted to receive the ring D, as specied, in combination with the ring D, having the depression D and right-angled twist D2, substantially as described, and for the purposeset forth.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MONTGOMERY DAKIN.
