Unirse STATES ArtNr einen..
LOUIS WIDMAYER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
POOL-RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,422, dated March 4, 1884.
i Application filed January 30, 1884. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, Louis WIDMAYER, a citizen'of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pool-Racks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. My invention relates to an improved poolball rack. l The object of the invention is to 'provide means for removing all the balls from the 'rack simultaneously, and, further, to provide means for locking the balls within the rack, to prevent their removal wlien not being used by players.
To the accomplishment of the above the invention consists of the novel devices and com' bination of devices as will be'described and claimed.
Reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of the rack; Fig. 2, a sect-ion on line l 1 of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a section on line2 2-of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 a section on line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Like letters refer to like parts in each v-iew.
The rack I prefer to make of iron, being cast in one or more pieces, as desired, and consisting of upright end pieces, a, and crosspieces b. In one of the uprights a series of holes, c, are formed, one above the other, and of sufcient size to allow of the balls being passed therethrough, and the cross-pieces are sufficiently far apart to allow the players to distinguish the numbers generally marked thereon, but not to allow of the withdrawal of the balls from between them.
Cast upon the inner face of each upright a are a series of brackets or supports, d, situated as shown, and upon eachpair of which a wooden cross-piece, e, is placed, said crosspieces serving to divide the rack into comthrough openings made near the top and bottom of a rod, h, which is free to move across the rack, and which, bythearrangement described, is guided on the rods f. Secured to the 'frametion or withdrawalhof the same.
work at any suitable point, and extending thereacross, is a rod, r,which fits into a groove ,formed in a projection, lc, of rod h, Fig. 2, said opposite end of the rack to that where the balls 6 are inserted, and when it is desired to remove the balls from the several compartments simultaneously, said rod is moved along on its guides, the arms Z thus being brought into contactwith said balls and forcing-them through 7o the openings c, referred to, into any suitable basket or other receptacle.
The second part of the invention relates to the locking mechanism, or the means employed for preventing the removal of the balls, if desired, and consists of the following features: At points near the top and bottom of the 11pright a, through the openings c of which the balls are inserted, and near to the rear edge thereof, are formed brackets m, -in which a rod, o, has bearings. Rod o has-cast with it a series of arms, p, one for each opening c, and by turning said rod the arms p either close said openings or are carried away from them-in the first instance to prevent the withdrawal of theA 8 5 balls, and in the second to allow of the inser- One ofthe arms p is provided with an enlarged and hol low end, q, into which the catch of a springlock, o', enters when the armsare turned to close the openings. Lock fr is secured to the upright a, and may be of any desired construc tion and operated by any suitable key, s.
By the arrangement of parts as last described, efficient means are obtained to prevent the removal of balls when desired.
Ifdesired, the lock r may be other than a spring-lock, and a suitable spring, h, passed around rod .0, to keep the vopenings always closed but not locked.
What I claim is- A 1. Apool-rack formed of iron, and provided Wit-l1. removable Wooden crosspieces or ballstructed as described, of :L spring-lock, o', and supports, as described. :L rod, o, provided with arms p, one of which 2. The combination, with a poolmck, of a. is formed with an enlarged hollow end, q, :1s vertical rod provided with a series of arms, described. 15
5 and adapted to force all the balls from the In testimony whereof Iafx my signature iu ruck. simultaneously, as described. presence of two Witnesses.
3. The combination with in Gol-rack of a l f n rod provided with arms adaptgd to close the LOUIS XVIDMAY LR' oriees of said rack, and means for locking the Nitnessesa 1o parts together, as described. XV. J. CLAGETT,
