The principal object ofrsuch invention is to provide unique and attractive apparel for dolls and the like toys of the type referred to, which apparel is constructed in a novel manner which is designed to produce unusual, striking, and pleasing designs or decorative effects.

A further object of the invention'is to provide such apparel of the type indicated which is constructed in a novel manner whereby it is relatively inexpensive `and quite simple to produce from the standpoint of the operational phases employed in its manufacture.

In carrying my invention into practive I provide novel apparel of the type referred to in the form of a dress or suit for dolls and the like, which dress or suit includes a torso enclosing or body portion, connected sleeves or sleeve portions, and connected leg portions, all of which portions are comprised of rectangular panels which are assembled and connected together in a novel manner to produce the finished article of apparel and I provide strategically located gathering means in conjunction with such apparel article whereby novel draping of the same is attained with resultant production of uniqueand striking design effects by virtue of the unusual shaping or formation which may be given to the finished apparel article by the operation of said gathering means.

Also according to my invention I provide novel head dress for dolls and the like, which head dress is likewise produced in a novel manner from a single rectangular panel of material and is especially appropriate in costume ensemble with the dress or suitproduced according to my invention as above mentioned. q

For a detailed description of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawing in which:

Now referring to the drawing and describing the invention in detail, reference is first made to Figures l and 2 wherein is illustrated a doll costumed in the head dress and dress or suit made according to my invention.

In these figures the head of the doll is generally designated bythe numeral 1; the arms of the doll are indicated by the numerals 2 and 3; and the legs of the doll are designatedby the numerals 4 and 5. The torso or body portion of the doll is completely covered by the dress or suit generally designated by the letter A and is therefore not seen in Figures l and 2. The doll itself may be of any suitable construction and/or material but in one form may be made of cloth or plastic sheet material suitably shaped and stuffed with soft material such as cotton, sponge rubber or the like. v

The doll costumed according to my invention is provided with the head dress thereof as illustrated in Figures l and 2, the head dress being generally designated by the letter B.

As shown by Figures 3 and 4 the dress or suit A may comprise four rectangular panels of cloth or the like material secured together along adjacent edges as illustrated in Figure 5 to constitute the body portion or torso enclosing portion of the dress or suit. The four rectangular panels constituting the body portion of the dress or suit are individually designated by the

6, 7, 8, and 9 respectively and as shown in Figure 5 these panels may be of equal area. It is not necessary, however, that all of the panels `6, 7, 8, and 9 be of equal area although it is preferable that at least alternate panels of the body portion be of equal area; thus alternate panels `6 and 8 will preferably be of equal area and alternate The said panels of material constituting the body portion of the dress are secured together at adjacent edges; thus panels 6 and 7 are secured together at adjacent edges as indicated by stitching 10; panels 7 and 8 are secured together at adjacent edges as indicated by stitching 11; and panels 8 and 9 are similarly sewn together at adjacent edges as indicated by stitching 12.

Alternate panels 6 and 8 are slit as indicated at 6a and 8a respectively along median lines represented by dash lines 6b and 8b extending centrally lengthwise of said panel, the slits 6a and 8a extending from the bottom edges of the panels along saidrmedian lines for approximately one third of the length of the panel.

7 and 9 are provided with arm hole slits 7a and 9a respectively extending for a distance approximately equal to one half the width of the sleeve panel along median lines indicated by numerals 7b and 9b extending centrally lengthwise of the

7 and 9, said arm hole slits '7a and 9a extending from a point adjacent the upper edge of the body portion of the dress or suit along said median lines for the distance indicated.

6, 7, 8, and 9 are slit and Asewn tol gether as indicated in Figure 3, the material comprising the'body portion of the dress is folded along the median line 7b and arranged so that the panel v6 overlies and coincides With the panel 8 whereby the crotch slits 6a and 8a will coincide in the manner illustrated by Figurev f 4. Under these conditions the left half of the panel 7- referring to Figure 3 overlies the right half of said 'panell 1 when the material is arranged in the condition of Figure 4. In the latter gure the material is folded along 'the median line 9b so that the right half of the panel 9 overlies the left half of said panel as seen in Figure 3 when the material is arranged in the condition of Figure 4. Thus in the condition of the latter figure the edge 6c of the panel 6 lies adjacent the edge 9c of the panel 9 and the

respective edges

6c and 9c are sewn together as if' dicated by stitching 13 in Figure 4.

Also as illustrated in Figure 4 the material of panels 6 and 8 is sewn together along adjacent sides of the crotch slits 6a and 8a as indicatedat the line'14 in Figure 4 and the material of'said panels 6 and 8 is sewn together along the other adjacent sides of the crotch slits 6a and Sa as indicated by the line 15 in Figure 4 to form the crotch portiony 16 of the dress or suit.

As seen best in Figures 4 and 9 the sleeves generally indicated by the letters c and d may each consist ofl a single rectangular panel- 17 which is folded along the median line 17a' extending lengthwise of the panel of the material so that the lower half of such panel overlies the upper half referring to Figure 9 whereby the lower edge 17b will lie adjacent the upper edge 17C of the sleeve panel referring to Figure 9 and the said edges 17b and 17C may be sewn together as indicated by the line of stitching 18 in Figure 4. The sleeves c and d are set into the arm hole slits 7a and 9a respectively and sewn therearound as indicated by stitching 19 and 2t) respectively.

' The upper marginal edge of the body portion of the dress is folded over and suitably stitched to provide a draw string tunnel 21 at the neck portion of the dress and is provided with a draw string 22 therein. The lower marginal edges of the leg portions of the dress or suit are likewise folded over and suitably stitched to provide the

The material of each of the

6, 7, 3, and 9 and the sleeve panels C and D may be of a different design or pattern to provide a gaily decorative eifect and when the dress or suit is placed on a doll as illustrated in Figures l and 2 and the draw strings 22 drawn tightly to gather the material at the neck portion and the draw strings 2S and 26 drawn tightly to gether the material at the lower edges or culi portions of the leg portions a novel draping effect of the material will be obtained whereby the colors and patterns of the various panels will be attractively intermingled.

Preferably the sleeves c and d will be relatively wide and the same are provided with draw string tunnels 27 in which the draw strings 28 are inserted when the dress is on the doll and these draw strings are drawn tightly the cuff portions of the sleeves will be gathered to provide putt sleeves draped in folds.

Referring now to Figures 5 and 6 a modiiication of the construction of the dress or suit is there illustrated comprlsing similar rectangular panels of

30, 31, 32, and 33 which are sewn together as illustrated in Figure 5. It is to be noted however that in this construction the adjacent panels and 31 are sewn together as indicated by the line of stitching 34 extending from the bottom edge of the body portion, except that the panels 30 and 31 are left separated at the portion indicated by the numeral 35 to provide an arm hole slit. Similarly the panels 32 and 33 are secured together as indicated by the line of stitching 36 except that these panels are left separated at the portions indicated by the numeral 37 to provide an armhole slit or opening. The sleeves e and f are constructed similarly to the sleeves C and D previously described will be set in the respective armhole slits or openings 35 and 37 and sewn there around. The panels 31 and 32 are sewn together along their adjacent edges as indicated bythe stitching 38 extending fromthe top edge of the body portion to a point spaced frornthe bottom edgethereof whereby the panels 31 and 32 are left separated` to provide the crotch separation 39.

After the panels 30, 31, 32,V and33 are secured together in the manner indicated in Figure 5, the material is folded along the line of stitching 34 so that the panel 3i) will overlie and coincide with the panel 31 and the material is folded along the line of stitching 36 so that the panel 33 overlies and coincides with the panel 32. The adjacent edges cf the panels 3@ and 33 are sewn together as indicated by the stitching 4@ from the crotch separation to the upper edge of the body portion. The

The edge of the panel 31 at the crotch slit or separation 39 is stitched to the lower portion of the edge 36a 0f the panel 3G and the edge of the panel 32 at the crotch separation 39 is stitched to the lower portion of the edge 33a of the panel 33.

The sleeves E and F are set into the armhole openings 35 and 37 and stitched therearound as previously described. A draw string tunnel 41 is provided at the upper edge of the body portion for the draw string 42; draw string tunnels 43 for the

44 and 45 for the draw string 45 are provided at the lower edges of the leg portions; and draw string tunnels 47 for the draw strings 43 are provided at the culi? edges of the sleeves e and ,t all in a manner similar to that described with reference to Figures 3 and 4.

The novel head dress according to my invention may be made of a single rectangular panel of cloth or like material designated by the numeral 50, which panel will preferably be'square as shown in Figure 7. The panel 5t) is folded along the diagonal median line indicated by dash line 51 so that the edges Stia and 50h are brought together' and secured as indicated by the line of stitching 52 to form the Cornucopia shaped cap as illustrated.

It will be seen from the foregoing that the apparel articles constructed according to my invention are made very simply from all rectangular panels of material secured together in a very simple manner to produce a unique doll clothing ensemble including cap and dress or suit and which ensemble when put on a doll or the like is capable of producing a novel draping and design effect of striking and attractive appearance.l

i I claim:

A garment for dolls and the like, comprising a body portion formed of two pairs of rectangular panels of material, the panels of each pair being sewn together along adjacent marginal edges and the vertical marginal edges of one pair of panels being sewn to the vertical marginal edges of the other pair of panels, each pair of said panels having coincident crotch separation slits each extending along a median line of a respective panel from the lower edge thereof part way toward the top edge thereof, the respective crotch separation edge of one panel being secured to a respective crotch separation edge of the other panel to provide said garment with separated leg portions, another panel of each pair being provided with an armhole separation slit each located adjacent the upper edge of the respective panel and extending along a median line thereof, and a pair of sleeves each formed of a single rectangular panel of material having its opposite side edges secured together and set into and sewn to the armhole separation edges of a respective pair of said panels.
