DEVICE FOR HOLDING OPEN THE LEAVES OF BOOKS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,087, dated. February 26,1884.

Be it known that I, GEORGE D. B. SMALL, of Chelsea, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts have invented a new and Improved Device for Holding Open the Leaves of Books, of which the following is a specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my device in position holding open the leaves of a book-in this instance a musicbook. Fig. 2 isa view of the device removed from said position.

This device consists of a single piece of wire, formed into a central horizontal loop at A, provided with a ring or clasp, a, diverging at B, and formed into two loops at O O, bent horizontally, as shown at D D, and downward at E.

To place the device in position on a book, grasp the loops 0 with the thumb and finger, and press them toward each other until the parts E are brought sufficiently forward to make a sufficient space between the parts E and the loop A, then place the device on the open book, with the loop A behind and the parts E in front against the opposite leaves, as shown in Fig. 1.

The wire is preferably wound with silk or some similar material, and wound more thickly at the ends E E, in order to prevent marring the book. 7

Any equivalent device maybe used in place of the ring a; or a coil may be taken in the GEORGE D. B. SMALL.
