Description

v UNITED STATES V PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN s. SMITH, 0E JACKSON, MICHIGAN, Assrenon 0E ONE-HALF To THEADORE e. BENNETT, 0E SAME PLACE.
TIILE-MA-CHINEVI SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,804, dated- February 19, 1884.
Application filed November 30, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN S. SMITH, of J ackson, in the countyof Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tile-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of machines in which tubes of clay are formed by pressure, forcing the clay or other plastic ma-' terial from a chamber in a continuous stream through an annular die.
It consists in combining with a stationar core an adjustable tube and eccentrics, by which the tubular portion of the die may be adjusted conveniently, for the purpose of maintaining a uniform delivery of the plastic tube as it emerges through the annular die.
It 'is well known that whenever one part of the annulus is obstructed, as compared with another part, the plastic material will be retarded in such obstructed portion, and consequently the emerging plastic tube will curve toward that side, more material being delivered through the more open portion. This principle has been utilized to make curved pipe-such as are employed for elbows or for trapsby affording to the operator the means of controlling the efflux while the machine is in operation. The same means for making curves may be used for preventing the curvature of the emerging tube by counteracting irregularities; and I do not therefore claim, broadly, all means by which this may be done, but seek in this specification to cover the special device which in practice I have found convenient for adjusting the shell to the core, and so causing the tube to be delivered'in proper shape.
In the annexed drawings, which make part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the die attached to a segment of the mill. Fig. 2 is a section on the horizontal plane through the center of the core. Fig. 3 is an elevation, partly in section. a
The same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of identical parts.
A is a plate attached to or forming part of the shell of the pug-mill; or it may be the end of a horizontal tile-machine. Through a round hole in this plate the conical die B projects, being, as is common in such machines, supported on the end of the worm-shaft.
O is the external sleeve of the die, the clay being forced, in forming the pipe, through the annular space between the core and the sleeve.
This sleeve is attached to or forms a part of theadjustable base-plate O, which has at one end a roundhole, O and at the other an ob- I long hole, 0 the longest diameter of which is on the line of the axis. passing through the centers of the die and the two holes. 'Stems D D, attached to the plate A, and atright' eccentrics may be turned.
F F are jam-nuts tapped onto threads cut on the outer ends of the stems D, for the purpose of confining and holding in place the eccentrics. The die is adjusted by relieving the eccentrics by turning off the jam-nuts, and then, by means of wrenches placed on the heads of the eccentrics, they may be turned in the holes 0 0 carrying with them the sleeve until it is brought into any desired relation to the core. Whatever may be the irregularity of form, whether on one side or the other, above or below, it may be corrected by the motion of the sleeve. allows the free transverse play of the plate 0, the motion being controlled by that of the eccentric in the round hole.
When the sleeve is properly adjusted by means of the eccentrics, they may be secured by turning on the jam-nuts.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the core and adjustable sleeve of a-tile-machine die, the eccentrics E E, acting in holes in the base-plate of the The elongated hole 0 sleeve to adjust its position in relation to the core, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of twoattestin g witnesses.
