Bymeans of the gas-burner 25 I am enabled to heat a portion of the pipe by an annular 1 flame fed by air and gas through the narrow slots 26 and 26*, Fig. 2, and Icool said heated portion after it is bent by jets of water through the short nozzles 27, the jets of water being applied contiguous to the flame and between it and the advancing end 22 of the pipe, and the water is supplied to the nozzles 27 from an annular chamber 27, which is fed through a pipe 27 from a similar chamber 27, which receives its supply from any source of water-suppl y through a pipe 27. Through the gudgeons 28 of the annular burner 25 I insert screw-threaded pipes 29, to which are fastened, by union-couplings 30, right-angled pipes 31, which receive the gas-supply pipes 32, as shown in Fig. 3, by which I admit gas under pressure to the annular chambers 32 of the burner 25. Air is admitted through pipes 32 to an annular chamber 32 of the burner. The annular burner 25 may be rocked in its bearings 24 to vary the plane of the burner relatively to the axis of the pipe 22, so that by inclining the burner, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an elliptical rather than a circular portion of the pipe 22 is heated. By inclining the burner I am able to vary the shape of the bent pipe in cross-section as, for example, from a circular to an elliptical shape in cross-section. The variation of the annular burner 25 I accomplish by a rod 33, which is attached to a flange 34 at the lower side of the burner 25 and inserted through a block 35 on a bar 36, journaled in bracket 37, which is supported by the frame of the apparatus, and said rod 33 is held from accidental movement by a set-screw 38 in said block, as shown in Fig. 6
The pipe 22 to be bent is inserted between the rolls 3 and 5 and through the burner 25, and its end 22 is engaged by the hook of the radius-rod 20, the bar 12 having been adjusted to make the distance between the end of the pipe 22 and the axis of the rock-shaft 17 equal to the radius of the desired curvature of the pipe. Pressure is then applied to the opposite end of the pipe and in the direction of its length by means of a follower 39, carried by a piston-rod 40 and actuated by an ordinary hydraulic cylinder 4C1. \Vhen the resistance of the heated portion becomes less than the pressure exerted by the piston 40, the pipe will be advanced, and as its forward end is held by the radius-rod 20 it will be bent at its weakened portion on the are of a I circle whose radius-is represented by the length of the radius-rod 20, and as soon as the heated burner 25 it will be cooled by the water from the nozzles 27, and its curvature thereby becomes permanently set.
The operation of my device is as follows: The distance between the rolls 3 and 5 being adjusted by raising or lowering the roll 5 to 1 receive the pipe 22, which is to be bent, the
pipe is inserted between the rolls 3 and 5 and is fed through the annular burner 25 by the follower 39 and hydraulic cylinder 41. The desired degree of curvature having been determined and the radius of a circle obtained which will embody such degree of curvature,
engage the end 22of the pipe to be bent. It
is obvious that as the hydraulic cylinder 41 continues to press the pipe forward it will be held from longitudinal movement by the rod 20, and the only direction in which the end 22 can move is on the arc of a circle with the rod 20 as its radius. This of course necessitates a bend in the pipe, which takes place when the resistance against bending is reduced by heating until it is less than the pressure exerted by the hydraulic cylinder. When the portion inclosed within the annular burner 25 is heated enough to reduce its resistance below the force exerted by the hydraulic cylinder 41, the pipe will be forced forward on the arc of a circle with its radius equal to the rod 20, and that portion of the pipe will have received the desired curvature. As the pipe is advanced beyond the line of flame it passes between the nozzles 27, by means of which it is cooled and further bending at that point prevented. The movement of the pipe also brings a fresh portion into the annular burner, when it is heated as before and the operation is repeated. As considerable pressure may be applied by the hydraulic cylinder it is not necessary that the heating of'the pipe proceed very far before the pipe is ready to bend, so
that the bending may proceed with comparative rapidity, and excessive heat is not required from the annular burner. It is also obvious that the operation of the apparatus will continue without attention until the pipe is fully bent into the desired curvature. .lt is also only necessary to adjust the apparatus when a new pipe is inserted of different diameter or which requires to be bent in a different curvature, each pipe being completely and correctly bent without the need of care or attention.
I do not wish to confine myself to the speciflc construction shown, as minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The rolls 3 and 5 are arranged in different vertical planes to resist the bending strain on the pipe, and when the strain is applied by the radius-rod 20 the rolls 3 and 5 serve to hold the pipe from displacement in a vertical plane by their position and also in a horizontal plane by means of their grooved surfaces.
While a hydraulic cylinder aflords a convenient method of applying a longitudinal pressure to the pipe, I do not confine myself to such use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus for bending pipe,the combination with a framework, rolls supported by said framework in different planes and adapted to receive the pipe to be bent between them, an annular burner, means for imparting a longitudinal pressure to one end of the pipe to be bent, and means for maintaining the opposite end of the pipe at a constant distance from a [ixed point concentric with the desired curvature of the pipe.
2'. In an apparatus for bending pipe,the combination of a framework, two fixed supports in different planes adapted to receive the pipe to be bent, means for heating a section of the pipe contiguous to one of said supports, means for imparting a longitudinal movement to the pipe between said supports, and means for maintaining the advancing end of the pipe at a constant-distance from a fixed point concentric with the desired curvature of the pipe.
3. In an apparatus for bending pipe,the combination of a pair of supports in different planes arranged to bear against the pipe to be bent and on opposite sides, means for imparting a longitudinal movement to the pipe be tween said supports, and means for applying a pulling strain to the advancing end of the pipe toward a point concentric with the desired curvature of the pipe.
4. In an apparatus for bending pipe, the combination with a pair of supports in different planes and arranged to bear against opposite sides of the pipe'to be bent, of means for imparting a longitudinal movement to the pipe, means for maintaining the advancing end of the pipe at a constant distance from a fixed point and means for applying heat around the entire periphery of the pipe.
In an apparatus for bending pipe, the combination with a pair of supports in different planes and arranged to bear on opposite sides of the pipe to be bent, means for imparting a longitudinal movement to the pipe, means for maintaining the advancing end of the pipe at a constant distance from a fixed point, means for heating a section of the pipe between said supports and its advancing end, and means for cooling said heated section as the pipe is moved forward.
6. In an apparatus for bending pipe, the combination of means for imparting a longitudinal movement to the pipe to be bent, means for imparting a bending strain to the advancing end of the pipe, means for continuously and successively heating sections of the pipe, and supports arranged to bear against opposite sides of the pipe to resist the bending strain applied to the advancing end of the pipe.
7. In an apparatus for bending pipe, the combination of a framework, a pair of supports arranged to bear against opposite sides of the pipe to be bent and in different planes, means for moving the pipe longitudinally, means for heatinga section of the pipe between said supports and its advancing end, and a swiveled radius-rod engaging the advancing end of the pipe.
8. In an apparatus for bending pipe, the combination with means for supporting the pipe to be bent, means for imparting a longitudinal movement to the pipe, means for imparting a bending strain to the advancing end of the pipe and consisting of a radius-rod engaging the advancing end of the pipe, and means for varying the length of said radiusrod.
9. In an apparatus for bending pipe, the combination of a framework, supports for the pipe to be bent, held in said framework in different planes and arranged to bear against opposite sides of the pipe, means for varying the distance between said supports to receive pipes of different sizes, means for moving the pipe lengthwise, means for imparting a bending strain to the advancing end of the pipe, and means for heating and cooling continuously successive sections of the pipe.
10. In an apparatus for bending pipe, the combination with means for supporting the pipe to be bent, of an annular burner for heating a section of the pipe, and means for maintaining said burner in a plane at an oblique angle to the axis of the pipe.
