HENRY F. SHEPHERD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CASE PRlNTlNG AND EMBosslNG MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Yof Letters Patent No. 293,797, dated February 19, 1884.
Application filed February 2, 1883. (No model.)
lo au whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY F. SHEPHERD, of the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia andState of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in'Case Printing and Ernbossing- Machines, of which the following is a specification. l
My invention has reference to case printing and embossing machines, but more particularly to that class of machines especially adapted for printing book covers or cases; and it consists in certain vimprovements in the wellknown Buggles printing-press patented N ovember 10, 1&40, by which it is converted into a completely organized case or light embossing machine, as fully set forth in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form part thereof. The object of myinvention is to so construct and arrange the parts of amachine of this class that the strains due to the impression are received by suitable supports in such a manner that no matter where the type or form may be placed on the form-plate there is no possibility of displacement or uneven impression; further, to provide suitable supports for the impression plate, Vwhereby it may be adjusted vertically without increasing its upward movementand to provide the receiving-plate with adjustable guides wherewith to insure proper registration of the book-cases placed thereon.
In the drawings, Figure lis a sectional side elevation of a machine embodying my improvements, taken on line x @c of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front sectional elevation of same on line y y of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the receivingplate, and shows the guide or registering devices; and Fig. 4L is a cross-section of the registering device on line z z of Fig. 3.
A is the frame of the machine, and is pro- 'vided at the top with horizontal guideways A',
in which carriage B slides,v the latter carrying loosely supported thereon the receiving-plate C, which is prevented from slippingbackward by a rib or bar, b. The carriage B carries on its other end one or more inking-rollers, Bf, adapted to vertical movement. This carriage B is reciprocated byA an arm, D, connected thereto at the top by alink, d, and secured to a rock-shaft, D,`carried inthe frame A, and actuated by an arm, D2, carrying a roller, d',
which works in cam-groove e in the face of cam-wheel e, which is' driven by a spur-wheel, E, and a pinion, E', on apshaft, E2, the latter being rotated byband-wheels E, and steadied by a iiy-wheel, F.
Secured to the frame A on each side, and to the rear of the receiving-plate7 are four heavy vertical bolts, G, provided on their tops with nuts g and washers g. Y The form-plate I-I is pivoted at h to the frame A or an extension therefrom, and is supported on the other end by pins or lugs h, so as to lie-horizontally between the four bolts G and sufficiently high that when form H is glued or otherwise secured to the under side thereof it shall be inked by the passing rollers B. This former-plate is re-enforced on the upper side with heavy hubs h2 and ribs h3, toprevent any bending or springing thereof', and is clamped down in position by housings I, two in number, which eX- tend across the upper face of the hubs of said plate and iit around thev bolts G by slots t' under nuts g. Immediately below said formerplate is the impression-plate J, which is guided by two downwardly-extending guide-rods, J', which work through v holes j in the frame Aor extensions therefrom. The bottom of this plate is hinged to the arm K, by which rit is actuated, the said arm having its bottom notched at 7c, so as to catch upon a pin or lug, L, carried by ahub, M, made fast to a shaft, N. The shaft revolves in Vbearings n, which may be open at the top, and has secured to it the gear-wheel E and cam-wheel e. The arm K is caused to swing out of reach of the pin L by strap or chain O, which passes over a guide, O', and carries aweight, O2, and may be pulled into operating position by a strap, P, having one end secured to the periphery of wheel P', secured toa shaft rotated by handle p.v The impression-plate J is provided on the bottom with stop-pins S, which rest upon the lugs T of frame A, and by which the downward movement of the plate J may be reduced by the interposition of metal pieces t or by increasing the length of said pins, and also relieves all Wear from the under side of said plate.
Q is an vink-carrying roller, to ink the inking-rollers B. The receiving-plate C is provided with an l.. -shaped guide, R, which is T- slotted, as at r', the longer leg having a loose re-enforcing slide, r', to prevent springing of saidlong slotted leg. There are three or more IOO additional slide blocks, rl, to which are adagainst the form or typeH, which is held im justably pivoted by screws fr the registeringerms 1'", having slots r. The guide R- is secured to the plate C by screws l', and maybe set to or from the center of the plate; but by the use of arms r and the double housings I this is not necessary, as the pressure given to the impression is equal over the entire surface of the receiving-plate- Y rlhe operation is as follows: The book ense 01 cover V being; placed in position upon the receiving-plate G and brought to the proper register, the l1 andlep is pulled, which throws the arm K into position to be @ought by the pin L. Prior thereto, however, the conigroove e' causes the arm D to be moved forward, causing the carriage and its plate@ to move to :t position immediately below the form-plate H, where itcomcs to rest, und during said period of rest the hiking-rollers take fresh ink, :md the arm K raises the impression-plate J and the receiving-plate Cwith its ense or cover, causing the latter to be pressed movztbleby theherrvy double housingsl I. The said plates with the printed or embossed cover then descend, the impression-plate resting on its stop-pins. As soon as the arm K is freed again, the weight O causes its end to be drawn over to the other side and in position for another impression. The carriage is then moved back and a new case or cover placed upon the plate C, the printed one having been removed.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, end desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of theimpressioirplote, its guide-pins, guide-lugs, and stoppins, substantinlly as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my lmnd.
