(Cl. 2804-158) The present invention is directed to, and it is a major object to provide, a novel scraper unit for a flat-faced wheel of an implement used in farming, road building, or the like; the unit being operative to scrape adhered dirt, mud, or debris from the face of the wheel as the latter rotates, and to the end that such wheel does not clog, does not jam with adjacent parts of the implement, and runs smoothly and evenly on the-ground.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a scraper unit, for the purpose described, which includes a blade cooperating with the flat face of the wheel, and a novel mount which supports the bladein working position-from a rigid standard disposed adjacent but to one side of the wheel; such a standard being commonly included in implements of the type to which said scraper unit is adaptable.
, It isalso an object of the invention to provide la scraper unit which is designed for ease and economy of manufacture,l simplicity of installation, and long service with a minimum of maintenance or repair.
An additional object of the inventionis to provide a practical, reliable, and durable scraper unit, and one which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which itis designed.
These objects are accomplished by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the followingfspeciication and claims.

Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the scraper unit as mounted on aleft-hand standard of an implement, and cooperating with the at face of an adjacent wheel.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the scraper unit as so mounted.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional elevation of the scraper unit; the view being taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, "the scraper unit, which is indicated generally at 1, is here shown as mounted in connection with a left-hand standard 2 which upstands adjacent but clear of a wheel 3 of an implement; such wheel including a transversely` at face 4.
'Ihe scraper unit 1 comprises a longitudinal mounting bar 5 whose length is considerably greater than the width of the inside face of the standard 2; such longitudinal mounting bar 5 being secured centrally of its ends against the inside face of the standard 2 by means of a cap screw '6 which extends through such standard and is threaded into said mounting bar 5. As so mounted the spindle 8 is disposed a distance above thel corresponding portion of the wheel 3, and such spindle is of a length which spans the face 4 of said wheel. j
A substantially full-length sleeve 11 is turnably mounted on the spindle 8 and is removably secured against longitudinal displacement as follows:
A collar or nut 12 is threaded on the end of sleeve 11 adjacent the mounting bar 5; such nut being retained between said mounting bar and a sleeve retention arm 13 immediately inwardly of such nut. The retention arm 13 is formed with a bore 14 through which the sleeve passes; such retention arm 13 projecting rearwardly from the sleeve and, with an offset as shown, abutting the mounting bar 5. The part of the retention arm 13 which so abuts the mounting bar 5 is secured thereby by a bolt 15 which passes through a bore 16.
A grease fitting F is attached to the end of the sleeve 11 opposite the mounting bar 5 by means of a threaded coupling 17; such grease fitting being provided for the introduction of a lubricant between the spindle 8 and said sleeve 11. The nut 12.and coupling 1'7 are'interchangeable on the ends of the sleeve 11 for the purpose which will hereinafter be described.
A scraper blade 18 extends at a rearward and downward incline from adjacent the sleeve 11, and such scraper blade-which at its lower edge is sharpened, as at 19- screw 6 is normally tight so as to maintain the mounting bar 5 in rigid relation to the standard 2; said bar being disposed in a plane above the top of the implement wheel 3.l l
' The forwardly projecting portion of the mounting bar 5 yis formed,- adjacent` its outer end, with a tapped transis at least full width of the flat face 4 of Wheel 3.
A rearwardly and downwardly inclined attachment strap 20 is secured lengthwise and on top of the upper portion of the scraper blade 18 centrally of its sides by means ofl bolts 21. At its upper end the attachment strap 20 includes-in integral relation-a substantially semi-circular, downwardly opening loop 22 which is engaged over the sleeve 11 and secured thereto-preferably by welding, as at 23.
At its rearor lowerrnost end the attachment strap 20 is formed-in integral relation-with a rearwardly projecting longitudinal or normally substantially horizontal finger 24 which overhangs the lower portion of the scraper Vblade 18 in divergent relation thereto.
An inverted headed bolt 25 extends upwardly through the nger 24 adjacent its free end, and a distance abovev said finger the bolt passes through an over-size bore 26 in a horizontal bracket 27 xed in connection with, and projecting laterally inwardly from, the upper edge of the mounting bar 5 directly above the cap'screw 6. A heavy-duty compression spring 28 surrounds the bolt 25 between the finger 24 and the bracket 27; an adjustment nut 29 and a lock nut 30 being threaded on bolt 25 above the bracket 27. 4
'Ihe adjustment nut 29 is set so that the scraper blade 18-under the influence of the compression spring 284- is disposed in a position with the sharpened lower or cutting edge 19 very close to, but spaced from, the flat face 4 of wheel 3.
With rotation of said wheel 3 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. l, any dirt, mud, or debris adhered to the rising face of said wheel is effectively scraped or cut away, falling off onto the ground.

In some implements there is also a right-hand standard 31, and under certain circumstances it may be desirable to mount the scraper unit on such right-hand standard. To this end the mounting bar 5, at the projecting end portion opposite that which is formed with the tapped bore 7 and bore 16, is provided with corresponding bores indicated at 7a and loa. The mounting bar 5 is then reversed relative to the position shown in Figs. l and 2 and is attached to the right-hand standard 3l by the cap screw 6.
Nextly, the nut 12 and retention arm 13, and the grease fitting F and threaded coupling 17, are reversed on the sleeve l1; i.e., applied to the ends thereof opposite the arrangement shown in Fig. 3; the nut 12 and threaded coupling 17 being interchangeably threaded on said sleeve.
Thereafter, the spindle S is threaded through the tapped bore 7a and locked up by the nut 10; this being followed by replacement of the sleeve 8 and retention arm 13, the latter being secured by engaging the bolt 15 through the bore 16a. As so mounted on the right-hand standard 31, the spindle 8 projects toward the left in overhanging relation to the face 4 of wheel 3 with the blade 18 inclining rearwardly and downwardly for cooperation with said face 4- of the wheel 3; the spindle thus being reversed in the sleeve relative to Fig. 3.
Under certain circumstances where the fiat face 4 of wheel 3 is extremely wide, and the implement includes both a left and right-hand standard, it may be desirable to employ-on each standard-one of the blade mounting assemblies, including a mounting bar 5, spindle 8, and sleeve ll with its attachment strap 20; the sleeves and spindles being in axial alinement. With this arrangement a single blade full-width the face of the wheel would be employed and the two attachment straps 20 would be affixed to said single blade in transversely spaced relation. When two mounting assemblies, as above, are used, it may also be desirable to provide an adjustable connecting bar spanning between the two horizontal and transversely alined brackets 27.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that there has been produced such a device as will substantially fulfill the objects of the invention, as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, the following is claimed as new and useful, and upon which Letters Patent are desired:
l. A scraper unit for a wheel of an implement having a fixed member disposed laterally outwardly of and projecting beyond the face of said wheel; comprising a transverse spindle overhanging said wheel face, means rigidly securing the spindle at one end in connection with the member, a sleeve turnable on the spindle, means to prevent displaceinent of the sleeve lengthwise on the spindle, a wheel face scraper blade extending at a rearward and downward incline from adjacent the sleeve, means securing the blade in rigid connection with the sleeve, and means to adjust the blade relative to the wheel face; the spindle securing means including a longitudinal bar attached to said member, the spindle being fixed to and projecting from the bar, and said means which prevents lengthwise displacement of the sleeve comprises a collar element on the sleeve adjacent the bar, and a retention arm having a bore through which the sleeve extends closely adjacent the side of the collar element opposite the bar, a portion of said retention arm engaging and being secured to the bar in clearance relation to said collar element.
2. A scraper unit for a wheel of an implement having a fixed member disposed laterally outwardly of and projecting beyond the face of said wheel; comprising a transverse spindle overhanging said wheel face, means rigidly securing the spindle at one end in connection with the member, a sleeve turnable on the spindle, means to prevent displacement of the sleeve lengthwise on the spindle, a wheel face scraper blade extending at a rearward and downward incline from adjacent the sleeve, means securing the blade in rigid connection with the sleeve, means to adjust the blade relative to the wheel face, a grease fitting at the outer' end of the sleeve, and a coupling threadingly connecting the grease fitting to said outer end of the sleeve; said means to prevent lengthwise displacement of the sleeve including a collar element threaded on the inner end of the sleeve, and said coupling and collar element being adapted to thread on either end of said sleeve.
3. A scraper unit for a wheel of an implement having a xed member disposed laterally outwardly of and projecting beyond the face of said wheel; comprising a longitudinal bar secured to said member, a transverse spindle attached at one end to the bar and overhanging said wheel face, a sleeve turnable on the spindle, a collar element on the sleeve at the end adjacent the bar, a retention arm through which the sleeve passes in turnable relation adjacent but outwardly of the collar element, the retention arm including a portion engaging and secured to the bar in clearance relation to said collar element, a wheel face scraper blade secured to the sleeve and ex tending at a rearward and downward incline therefrom, a bracket fixed on the bar rearwardly of the spindle and projecting laterally in overhanging relation to the blade, a finger fixed on top of the blade and extending rearwardly below the bracket, an adjustment bolt connected between the finger and bracket and being slidable through the latter, and a compression spring about the bolt 'between said finger and bracket.
4. A scraper unit, for a wheel of an implement having a standard disposed laterally outwardly of and projecting beyond the face of said wheel; comprising a longitudinal mounting bar, means securing the mounting bar on the projecting portion of the standard, `a part of the bar extending forwardly of said standard, a transverse spindle secured to said part of the bar and overhanging said wheel face, a sleeve turnable on the spindle, a wheel face scraper blade secured to the sleeve and extending therefrom at a rearward and downward incline, a bracket fixed on the bar rearwardly of the spindle and projecting laterally in overhanging relation to the blade, and means between the bracket and blade to adjust the latter relative to the wheel face; the mounting bar securing means being releasable and supoprting the bar for adjustment, in a longitudinal vertical plane, about a transverse axis rearwardly of the spindle.
5. A scraper unit, for a wheel of an implement having a standard disposed laterally outwardly of and projecting beyond the face of said wheel; comprising a longitudinal mounting bar, means adapted to secure the mounting bar intermediate its ends to the standard with either end portion of the bar extending, selectively, forwardly of the standard, a transverse spindle overhanging the wheel face forwardly of the standard, means to secure the spindle at one end to the forwardly extending end portion of the bar, a sleeve detachably engaged on the spindle, a wheel face scraper blade extending at a rearward and downward incline from adjacent the sleeve, means securing the blade in rigid connection with the sleeve, and means reversibly mounting the sleeve and blade securing means as a unit on the spindle.
6. A scraper unit for a wheel Vof an implement having a xed member disposed laterally outwardly of and projecting beyond the face of the wheel; the unit comprising a longitudinal bar disposed against the member and extending forwardly therefrom, a wheel face scraper blade overhangng said face and extending at a rearward and downward angle thereto from a point adjacent the forward end of the bar, means swivelly connecting the blade to the bar at such point, means between the bar and blade to adjust the angle of the blade relative to the bar, and means transversely pivoting but clampingly securing the bar to said member whereby said bar may be adjusted about the pivot as an axis to alter the pitch of the blade relative to the Wheel face.
