SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,717, dated February 19, 1884.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, READING L. CARVER, of Pre-emption, in the county of Mercerand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky-Cultivators, of which the following is 'a full, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,forming part of this specification, in

which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan. view of my improvement, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the near wheel being removed. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4c is a sectional front elevation of the same, taken through the line m m, Fig. 2, and showing the plow-beams suspended.

The object of this invention is to promote effectiveness and reliability in the operation of sulky-cultivators and convenience in guiding and controlling such cultivators. v

The invention consists of the several combinations and arrangements of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

A represents the wheels, which revolve upon journals B, formed upon the ends of the outer arms of the U-shaped draw-bars O. The draw-bars 'O are arranged with their bends forward,and upon the said bends are formed, or to them are attached, hooks D or other couplings to receive the draft. In the arms of the draw-bars O are formed bearings for the lower arms of the cranks E, which are kept in place in the said bearings by linchpins or other suitable means.v The upper arms of the cranks E are placed in line with each other and rock in bearings in the frame F, where they are kept in place by linchpins or other suitable means. The middle part of the cross-frame F is bolted to the tongue G, and has flanges or a groove upon its lower side, to form a seat for the said tongue and strengthen the connection against side strain.

To the lower side of the tongue G, below the center of the cross-frame F, is pivoted, by a bolt or other suitable means, the center of the cross-bar H, the ends of which are slotted to receive the upright parts of the cranks E,

so that the said cranks, when swinging upon their upper arms, must always move together through equal spaces and in opposite directions.

To the ends of the cross-frame'F are -at--;;

tached arms I, which project forward, and to155 their forward ends are pivoted the upper ends of the rods or chains J. The lower ends of the rods or chains J are connected with the" draw-bars O at the bases of the draft-hooks D, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 8, to hold the said draw-bars in horizontal positions.

To the rear ends of the inner arms of the draw-bars G are pivoted the forward ends of the connecting rods or chains K, the rear ends of which are pivoted to the ends of the crossbar L. The cross-bar L is pivoted at its center to the lower side of the rear part of the tongue G, and is strengthened in place by the brace-bar M, whichis pivoted at its center to the upper side of the tongue G by the same bolt that pivots the bar L to the said tongue. The end parts of the brace-bar M project upon the opposite sides of the tongue G, and are then bent downward and are secured to the bar L by rivets or other suitable means,

thedownward. bends of the bar M being at such a distance from the sides of the tongue G as will allow the bars L M to have a free movement upon their pivot. The end parts of the bar L are curved upward to form hooks to receive the staples N, attached to the upper sides of the plow-beams O, to support the plows away from the ground when turning around and when passing from place to place.

(See Fig. 4.) With this construction the the said flanges and through the forward ends 9 5 of the plates S, secured to the upper and lower sides of the forward ends of the plow-beams 0, so that the rear ends of the plow-beams 0 will have a free lateral and vertical movement.

Several holes are formed in the flanges Q of the sleeves 1?,to'receive the pivoting-bolts B, so that the plow-beams can be adjusted ata greater or less distance apart, as may be desired.

I do not abandon or dedicate to the public any patentable feature set forth herein and not hereinafter cl aimed, but reserve the right to claim the same either in a reissue of any patent that may be granted upon this application or in other applications for Letters Patent that I may make.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a cultivator, the combination, with the cranks E, connected to the draw-bars having the wheels and shovel or plow-beams connected thereto, of the cross-frame F,with the upper portions of the cranks bearing therein, and the plate H, pivoted on the under side of the said frame, and having slots at its ends which receive the side bars of the cranks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. I11 a cultivator, the combination, with the cranks E, frmne F, and the drawbars C, pivoted on the lower ends of the cranks, and having apertured projections at about their central forward ends, of the arms I, affixed to the ends of the frame F, and the rods or chains J, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a cultivator, the combination,with the frame F, having the end slotted, pivoted bar H, and the cranks E, bearing in the former, of U shaped draw-bars O, pivoted upon the lower arms of said cranks, and connected at their forward ends, by rods or chains J, to the arms I of the frame F, and at their opposite ends to the tongue G by the rods or chains K and pivoted bar M, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. In a cultivator, the combination, with the frame F, having the end slotted, pivoted bar H, and cranks E, pivoted thereon, of the U shaped draw-bars C,pivoted upon the lower arms of the cranks, the rods or chains J, arms I, secured to the frame F, rods or chains K, bars M, sleeves I, disposed upon the cranks between the arms or sides of the draw-bars, and the cultivator-beams O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
