1 Claim. (Cl. 31-24) This invention relates to a new and improved slicing machine of the type utilizing a strong flexible wire member for the cutting and slicing operation.
The principal object of the present invention resides in the provision of a cutting device particularly for food such as cheeses for quickly and easily slicing the same manually without the use of a motor; the provision of a cutting table having a slot therein, a wire for operation in the slot, and a reel located under the table for maintaining tension on the wire, so that when the wire is manipulated in order to cut the food on the table, the spring in the reel maintains the same taut, and the cutting or slicing is accomplished by a substantially straightforward pull on the end of the wire; and the provision of a slicing device as above described including an adjustable fence on the table for positioning of the food thereon, particularly round cheeses and the like.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a very easily manually operated slicer for foods which are ordinarily very difficult or nearly impossible to slice, such as hard cheeses.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a machine according to the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the reel.
In carrying out the present invention, there is provided a flat top table which is conveniently made of metal or the like and is provided with appropriate legs 12 for supporting the same in spaced condition relative to a table top or bench. Table 10 is provided with a central longitudinal slot 14 extending from one edge thereof across the table to the region of an adjustable fence generally indicated at 16 against which the food 18 or other article to be sliced is positioned during the slicing operation.
The table is preferably provided with a flange 20 and at the edge of the table intersected by slot 14, this slot extending down into the flange as indicated at 22 for a purpose to be described.
The fence 16 comprises two parts 24 and 26 which are pivoted together as on a pin 28 in alignment with the slot. Each fence member 24 and 26 is provided with a thumb-nut 30 or the like for adjustably positioning the respective parts 24 and 26 angularly with respect to the adjacent edge of the table. These slots are illustrated at 32 and it will be seen that the article to be sliced may be accurately positioned by these fence members, so that the diameter of the article 18 coincides'with slot 14. for slicing flat or rectangular objects. The fence 16 is actually composed of two spaced upright members, and two horizontal members, the latter overlapping and being hinged together at 28. The spacing of the upright members forms a central passageway 33.
Below the table there is provided a bracket 34 which mounts a housing 36 in which is located a coil spring 38. This coil spring has connected thereto one end of a wire member 40, the other end of the wire member 40 being provided with a handle 42. Clearly as the handle 42 is drawn in a direction away from the reel, tension is applied to the wire and the reel will cause the wire to be drawn back into the housing 36 and wound, upon release of the handle 42.
The wire 40 extends through the portion of slot 14 at 22 and the handle 44 extending across this part of the slot and abutting the flange, causes the wire to be held normally in inoperative position as indicated in solid lines in Fig. 2.
With the article to be sliced in position against the fence, the handle is grasped and released from the flange, and is moved upwardly and toward the article to be sliced. The wire 40 shortens in length as it is drawn toward the fence due to the reel, this depending in some degree upon the height of the article to be sliced. It is merely necessary to apply a substantially straight pull in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2 to slice through the article 18 all the way to the fence, so that the article is seen to be sliced completely through.
The handle may then be positioned against the rear surface of fence 16 while the article to be cut is indexed for further cuts, particularly for wedges and parallel thin slices, and when the article 18 has been sliced as much as desired, then the handle 42 is placed back in the original solid line position in Fig. 2. As shown in Fig. 2, the cutting wire 40 passes directly through the passageway 33 which is generally aligned with slot 14 and pin 28, see Fig. 1.
This invention provides a machine for quickly and easily slicing all kinds of foods even hard cheeses which are ordinarily incapable of being neatly sliced by means of a knife. The reel maintains tension on the wire and keeps it in partially housed condition in the housing 36, and it is pointed out that in the absence of this reel, it would be necessary to bring the handle 42 as far to the left of the article being cut as is its initial position to the right thereof as shown in solid lines in Fig. 2. The cutting action thus results merely from a short pull on the handle. This construction helps to keep the machine clean and it is always ready for operation at an instants notice.
The construction may be of any suitable material such as stainless steel, aluminum, Monel, etc., and the fence is quickly and easily adjusted to suit the type of feed or cut desired.
Having thus described our invention and the advantages thereof, we do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claim, but What we claim is:
