Description

(No Model.)
' J. M. CONNER- TYPE GASTING MOLD.
No. 293,633. Patented Feb. 19', 1884.
I INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. CONNER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TYPE-CASTING MOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,633, dated February 19, 1884. Application filed December 26, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. CONNER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use Improvements in the Construction of Molds for Casting Metal Type; and I do hereby declare that the.
side of the mold. Fig. 4 is a view of the 1 notched strip employed by me.
In the drawings like parts of the invention are designated by the same lettersof reference.
The nature of the present invention consists in combining with a type-mold, as more fully hereinafter set forth, a movable notched strip, the invention being specially applicable to the casting of descending types, and, by affording a proper support for the descend ing lines, to reduce the weight of each type cast at least one-fifth, as the body, so to speak, can be made of less weight than if the type were cast in a mold constructed in the usual manner.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its con- 'struction.
A and B show, respectively, the two sections of which the type-mold is composed, and 0' shows the opening in the mold for the entranceof the molten metal from which the type is to be' formed. One section of the mold supports or is provided upon its interior, near its upper or top side, with a stationary strip or projection, while the opposite section is provided with a movable strip or proj ection, D, parallel,
when the sections of the mold are united, with the stationary strip or projection upon the opposite section of the mold. This movable strip or projection is notched, as at d, and is retained in position by a set-screw, c, or in any convenient manner.
The'operation maybe thus described: When letters or types known as descending letters are to be cast, the notched portion of the movable strip D is brought into proper position within its section of the mold, and in line with the stationary strip or projection upon the opposite section of the mold, and held in this position, as already described. The moltenv metal enters the mold through the opening 0, passes through the same to the opposite side of the mold, and the letter is formed, the descending portion of the same resting upon or being received within the notched portion of the strip D,while the body .of the type will be exactly they width of the space in the mold of the unnotched portion of the strip D and the corresponding strip or proj ection upon the opposite section of the mold.
My construction renders the mold available for casting other than what are known as. descending letters, for when other letters or types are to be cast the unnotched or plain portion of the movable strip isbrought opposite the stationary strip, and the body of the type then cast will be equal to the space between the two strips of the mold, or form, as it were, a con- -tinuation of the face portion of the type or letter.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new is A mold for forming type which may be descending or not, provided with the adjustable strip D, having at one edge the notch d,whereby the mold is adapted for both kinds of type, as set forth.
. JAMES M. CON-NEH. In presence of WILLIAM V. H. HIoKs, A. SIDNEY DOANE.
