MOLDING-FLASK.
Application filed February 26, 1915.
To all whom it aim-y concern Be it known that I, Esau J. BYERLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding- Flasks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to flasks for sand molds and pertains more particularly to that class of flasks in which is provided means for supporting the sand in the upper member or cope of the flask.
The invention pertains still more particularly to flasks having movable plates secured to the cope member and adapted tobe projected inwardly at the parting line between the cope and the drag to support the sand in the cope when the latter is raised.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby a number of these movable plates, which are technically known as slip plates, will be simultaneously projected into the flask from points around its edge and will be simultaneously withdrawn therefrom.
The object of my improvement is more particularly to provide a simple, inexpensive mechanical device that will simultaneously actuate all of the slip plates by a slight movement of rotation of a ring, or its equivalent, carried by the cope.
ith the above and certain other objects in view which will appear later in the specification, my invention consists in the devices described and claimed and the equivalents thereof, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of a flask embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the cope member, showing the movable slip plates. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a preferred form of slip plate. Fig. t is an enlarged cross section, taken on the lineH of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross section on the line 5---5 of Fig. 2.
As is clearly shown in the drawings, the device consists in a two-part flask comprising the drag l and the cope 2, which are employed in the usual and well-known manner, the cope being provided with pins 3 and i Specification of Letters Patent.

preferred form which has been found to work well in practice. In the form shown, 7 is a pivot, by which one end of the slip plate 6 is secured to the lower flange 10 of the cope 2, and 8 is an annular ring loosely mounted in a circumferential recess 9 of said flange 10, the ring being adaptedto have a limited movement of rotation, as indicated in Fig. 2, where 11 is a handle fixed to the ring 8, the position of the handle, as shown in dotted lines, indicating the amount of movement of which the ring is capable. Near the other end of the slip plate 6 is formed a diagonally disposed slot 12, which loosely receives a pin 1, the pin being fixed to the ring 8.
The inclination of the slot 12 is such that a limited movement of rotation of the ring 8 will cause the pin 13 to travel lengthwise the slot 12 and thereby cause the inner edges of all of the movable slip plates 6 to be simultaneously projected into the flask, or to be retracted therefrom. The inner edge 14 of the clip plate 6 is preferably beveled, to prevent breaking the edges of the body of sand when the cope is lifted from the drag.
To hold the ring 8 in place on the cope 2, I provide a number of outwardly projecting lugs 15, fastening them to the lower edge of the cope 2, as indicated in Fig. 5. Alternately disposed lugs 16, which are shown in detail in Fig. 4, are also secured to the lower edge of cope 2, these lugs 16 being preferably of greater thickness than the thickness of lugs 15. Thus, there are pr ferably three thin lugs, as 15, and three thick lugs 16, located around the periphery of the ring. The three thick lugs serve as spacers or distance pieces between the flanges of the drag 1 and cope 2 to give the required vertical clearance to permit the free movement horizontally of the slip plates 6, and to form three points of support for the cope on the upper flange of the drag, to prevent the cope from rocking on the drag.
Various modifications may be made in the construction and arrangement of the slip plates, it being merely essential to my invention that the ring shall be capable of limited circumferential movement, and that it shall, by its peripheral movement around the cope, be capable of simultaneously actuating all of the slip plates to simultaneously project them into, or retract them from the cope.
To automatically hold the slip plates in their normal or inwardly projected positions, I preferably provider a tension spring 17, or its equivalent, having one end attached to handle 11 and the other end attached to flange 10, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. In a molding flask, the combination of a drag, a cope, an annular ring revolubly mounted on the lower rim of said cope, a plurality of inwardlyand outwardly-movable slip plates carried by said cope, and means operatively connecting said slip plates and said ring and adapted to actuate all of said slip plates simultaneously when a movement of rotation is imparted to said ring.

plurality of inwardlyand outwardly-movable slip plates, each of said plates pivoted at one end to said cope, and means connecting the opposite ends of said plates and said ring, said means adapted to simultaneously actuate all of said slip plates when said ring 7 the cope, a plurality of inwardlyand outw Wardly-movable slip plates, each pivoted at one endto the cope and'slidingly engaged near the opposite end to said ring, and
means operatively connecting said slip plates and'ring, said means adapted to actuate all of said slip plates simultaneously when a movement of rotation is imparted to said ring, a handle on said ring and a spring connecting said handle and cope to normally retain the slip plates in their inwardly projected positions.
