. OU'TRAM; v I SLIDI N G BED- FOR MACHINERY. No. 293,591. Patented Feb 12,1884.
NrrE STATES FREDERICK OUTRAM, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
SLIDING BED FOR MACHINERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,591, dated February 12, 1884. Application filed December 4, 1882. Renewed November 6, 1883. .(No model.) Patented in Canada July 5, 1882, No. 15,048.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK OUTRAM,
' of the city of Montreal, in the District of Monfull, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of beds which are used for carrying the blank in file-cutting machines, and for planers, drills, lathes, and like machinery, where it is necessary for one part of the bed to slide on another part of the same, for the purpose of carrying the article being operated upon to and from the tool, 850., which acts upon such article.
The improvements consist, first, in the for mation of grooves or channels in either the sliding .or stationary part of the bed, or both, longitudinally with the line of movement, in order to admit of'the passage of air-and oileither or both-between the meeting surfaces of such sliding and stationary parts, for the purposeof assisting in the easy movement of the sliding piece.
My invention consists, secondly, in the combination, with a semicircular bed-such as is sometimes used in file-cutting machines-of feathers or tongues projecting from one section of the bed into similarly-formed ways in the other part of same, for the purpose of steady ing the sliding portion and keeping the same upright in its bed while the operation is performed upon the article carried on its upper surfaces.
The third part of the invention is the combination, with a semicircular bed piece or carrier, having one or more feathers or pro jections on its under side which-fit into and slide in similarly-shaped ways in the stationary bed-plate, of air channels or grooves arranged between the feathers at the junction of the two parts of the bed, cut in either or both, and extending longitudinally with said feathers.
To thoroughly comprehend my invention, reference must be had to the accompanying drawings, and t0 the following detailed detive view partly broken away. Fig. 4 is alongitudinal sectional elevation of same, and Fig. 5 shcwsmodified forms of ventilated bed.
A represents the stationary bed ofthe machine to which my invention may be applied, having its upper side channeled to receive the sliding carrier or bed-piece B, which is moved back and forth in said channel by whatever means may be suited tot-he purpose for whic the machine is used.
a (4 indicate any desired number of channels or grooves out in either the moving carrier B, on its under side, or in the face of the channel in the bed A, or in both, as shown, said grooves a a running longitudinally with the bed, and serving to admit air at the meeting surfaces in such manner as will prevent the formation of a vacuumfrom the constant pressure down ward of the sliding piece, these grooves also lessening the frictional surface, and also serving in some measure as reservoirs for the oil usedin lubrication, and for the grit, dust, and scale, &c., which would otherwise interfere with the free working of the bed.
b b represent the feathers or projections from the under side of the sliding carrier B,
fitting into the similarly-formed ways in the bed A, (three being used by preference,) the arrangement of which, as willbe readily seen, absolutely prevents the sliding carrier from turning in its semicircular bed, and therefore overcomes the objections heretofore found in half-round beds of this class, where no means of steadying same were employed.
It will be apparent that by the use of either of the elements of my invention-i. a, the airchannels and the feathers-or a combination of both, asliding bed-can be made to work very easily, the friction being greatly lessened, and simple and efficient means being providedto keep the bed steady and upright.
Having thus described my invention, what I elaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In a file-cutting or like machine, in st-w' having a number of corresponding longitudi- 10 11211 fenthersiorlned integral with it, and adapted to engaged with the grooves in the said bedplate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
FL OUTRAM.
