To all whom it 77am/ concern Be it known that I, SIGMUND BERGMANN, of the city, county, and State ofv New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sockets for Electric' Lamps, of which'the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sockets for supporting incandescent electric lamps, my object being to provide a compact, cheap, and durable socket, and one adapted to support a shadeholder in such manner that said shade-holder can be placed upon and removed from the socket without detaching the socket from the fixture which supports it, as has-hitherto been necessary; and my invention consists in the novel devices and combinations of devices used in accomplishing this object, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation ot my improved socket supporting its shade-holder, the latter being in section and the whole being in an inverted position; Fig. 2, an elevation and partial section of the socket placed upright with the shade-holder, and also a portion of the outer casing removed; Fig. 3, a section of the lower partof the socket; Fig. 4, a plan view of the interior of the socket; Fig. 5, a section cfa tion of the screw band or sleeve of the socket.
The socket consists of a base, A, of insulating material, preferably vulcanized tibcr,`to which 4is secured an internally and externally screw-threaded metal tube or sleeve, B. The parts just described are inclosed by a metallic caseconsisting, first, of a metal cap, C, provided with a screw-threaded aperture, h., which is to be screwed onto the end of a suitwires pass to the binding-screws. In the bottom of cap G are oblong apertures, through which pass the flat-headed screws z t', which enter the base A, and which may be turned,

Above the screw-threaded aperture h of the metal cap C the insulating-base` A has a central opening, 71,', through which the circuitwires (not shown) pass to t-he interior of the socket within the screw-sleeve B; This sleeve B has its walls cut away on opposite sides from points near their vertical center to the base A, forming openings if, through which tools can be introduced for drawing the circuitwires into the space within the sleeve B, and for securing such wires to the binding-screws d d. rIlhe circuit-connections are made while the metal sleeve D is removed from the. socket, and when the circuit connections are completed such sleeve is placed upon the socket, covering the screwfsleeve B and theopenings therein and concealing the connections.
F is the shade-holder,whicl1is provided with a plain band, G, and an inwardly-projecting rib or shoulder, k. The central ring or band, G, of the shade-holder ts over the sleeve D and surrounds the sleeve B at a little distance therefrom, and is limited in its movement on the sleeve D by the rib k. An internally-screwthreaded ring, H, of insulating material, having a ila-nge, I, is screwed upon the end of sleeve B, between said sleeve and band G, and holds the sha de-holder inposition. Such ring also vserves to keep the sleeve B separated from the outer portions of the socket, so as to prevent any electrical contact between them. To
remove the shade-holder, it is merely necessary lamp makes contact with the plate g, and the V able fixture, and through which the circuiti' so that their heads will cross the apertures to unscrew the ring II, when the shade-holder may be slipped off from the tube D.
Hithcrto in all electric-light fixtures, so far as I am aware, the shade-holder has been attached at the lower part of the socket and held between the socket and fixture, so that in -order to remove the shade-holder itwas necessary to take off the socket from the fixture, which delay and inconvenience are obviated by my invention.
l. The combination, with an incandescing electric-lamp socket, of a shade-holder removably secured directly upon sai d socket, whereby said shade-holder may be removed without displacing said socket, substantially as setV forth.
2. The combination, with an incandeseiug electric-lamp socket, of a shade-holder having a central ring or band fitting over said socket, and means for removably holding said band over said socket, substantially as set forth.
3. rIhe combinatiomwith the inner and outer metal portions of an iucandescing electriclainp socket, of a shadeholder fitting upon said outer portion, and a removable screwthreaded flanged ring of insulating material placed between said inner and outer portions, whereby the shade-holder is held removably, substan` tially as set forth.
4. The eombination,with the inner and outer metallic portions of an incandescing electriclamp socket, of a removable screw-threaded insulating band or ring placed between them, substantially as set forth.
5. In an ineandesoing electric-lamp socket, the combination, with a screw-threaded inetallio sleeve, B, forming one terminal, of an insulating-piece, f, supported by a metal plate, ce, above tho bottom of sleeve B, the metal plate g upon piece f forming the other terminal, the binding-screws d d within said sleeve B, and openings permitting the introduction of the circuit-wires within said sleeve B, and their proper connection with the bindingscrews, substantially as set forth.
6. In an incandescing electriclamp socket, the combination, with an insulating-base perforated to permit thcpassage of the circuitA wires therethrough, and the sockett-erminals supported upon said base, of a metal cap, C, secured to said base and having a central open` ing, h., the metal sleeve H, and securing device I, substantially as set forth.
7 In an incandescing electric-lamp socket, the combination, with base A, of the metal screw-sleeve B, supported thereon and 'forniing one terminal, the other terminal supported within said sleeve, openings h2 in the sleeve B, the cap C, secured to the base A, and the sleeve D, adapted to be passed over the sleeve B, and secured in position after the circuit-connecltions are made, substantially as set forth.
