SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,795, dated December 27, 1904.

To all 1071,0772 it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. PAIsTn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Shade-Holding Lamp-Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improve" ments in incandescent-lamp sockets, consisting more particularly in an improved structure of this character especially designed to provide a holder for a lamp-shade, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and inexpensive construction of permanently-connected lamp-socket shell and shade-holder, such that there is no possibility of these two elements becoming detached from one another either when subjected to prolonged vibration or rough or unusual treatment. These objects 1 secure as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved shade-holding lampsocket, showing the detail construction of that portion of the same hereinafter described. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the socket shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation showing the detail construction of a special form of my device.
In the above drawings, A and A represent the two portions of a shell of an incandescentlamp socket of well-known form, the former of these preferably consisting of two cylindrical sections a" and uf" of different diameters. There is provided within the socket apparatus B for the connection of electrical conductors, and this has in the present instance a key 7), by which a suitable switch of any desired design, forming a part of the apparatus B, may be operated to turn on or cut off the current for an incandescent lamp held in the socket. One of the terminals of the socket is shown at 7/, this having attached to it in the present instance an L-shaped piece of brass 6 extending into the bottom of, but insulated from, a threaded cylindrical piece O for the reception of a lamp. This piece is designed to contact with one of the lamp-terminals, of
which the second terminal engages the brass piece C when a lamp is placed in the socket. An insulating-lining D extends within the interior of the outer portion or member of the socket'shell, so as to prevent the possibility of contact between any of the live mechanism within the socket and the said shell.
In carrying out my invention I prefer to use an incandescent-lamp shell of the standard and well-known type, which is at present of the form shown in the drawings, being provided with an annular shoulder a near the lower end of its portion A.
The shade-holder E consists in the form illustrated of an inner and an outer ring e and 0, connected by radially-extended arms 0 and the inner of these rings is flanged so that its flanged portion will fit snugly around the outside of the cylindrical portion of the shell A between the annular shoulder a and the open end of the socket. After the shade-holder has been put in place the extreme edge a of the said shell A is turned or bent from the position shown in dotted lines at a in Fig. l to the position shown in full lines by spinning or other suitable method, andthereby retains the shade-holder permanently and rigidly in position upon the lamp-socket. If desired, this permanent connection may be secured by means of riveting, as suggested in Fig. 3, the rivets passing through the flanged portion 12 of the shade-holder and the portion of the shell A between the shoulder a and the end of said shell portion.

The combination of an incandescent-lamp socket shell having an annular shoulded adjacentto its open end and a second shoulder at said end with a shade-holder attached to the socket-shell and provided with a portion permanently confined between said two shoulders, substantially as described.
2. The combination of an incandescent-lampsocket shell having a projection adjacent to its open end, a shade-holder having a portion fitting over said open end and abutting said projecting portion, said end portion of the socket being turned over and thereby permanentl-y and rigidly holding said shade-holder in position, substantially as described.
3. The combination of an incandescent-lamp socket having an annular shoulder adjacent to its open end and having a substantially cylindrical portion between said end and the shoulder, a shade-holder having a flanged portion fitting said cylindrical portion of the socket, a part of said cylindrical portion being bent to engage said shade-holder thereby rigidly and permanently holding the same to the socket, substantially as described.
