FOLDING-BED BOTTOM.

, the following is a specification.
This invention consists in the combination,
with the slats which support the springs, of
two sets of end braces and two center braces, and 'of sliding swivel-clasps which form a movable connection between the braces and the slats.
The peculiar and novel construction of my bed is pointed out in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents an inverted plan when the bed is unfolded. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the bed when folded. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section in the plane a: :12, Fig. 1. Fig. 4L is a sectional view of one of my swivel-clasps on a larger scale than the previous figures. Fig. 5 is a detached view of one of the springs and its fastening.

In the drawings', the letters A BOD E F G designate the bottom slats of my spring-bed. These bottom slats are by preference made of hub-iron or sheet metal;. but they may be made of any other material suitable for the purpose, and they serve to support the conical springs H. These springs rest upon slats with their small ends, and they are fastened in position by means of rivets a, Figs. 3 and 5. The bottom slats are connected together by a series of end braces, I K L M N O P Q RS, two center braces, T U, and by swivel-slides V, as follows: The end brace I is pivoted at its outer end to one end of the slat A and at its inner end to the inner end of the end brace K. The outer ends of the end braces K L are pivoted to one end of the slat D. The inner end of the end brace L is 'pivoted to the inner end of the end brace M, and the outer end of this last-named end brace is pivoted to one end of the slat G.
On the brace I is secured a swivel-slide, V, which embraces the slat B, and on the braceK is secured a similar swivel-slide V, which embraces the slat G. On the braces L M are also secured similar swivel-slides V, one of which embraces the slat E andthe other the slat F. The construction of these swivel-slides will be understood by referring to Fig. 4. Each of them is composed of a piece of sheet metal, 1), the ends of which are bent in the form of the letter U, while from its center extends a pivot, c, which swivels in the braces T-for instance, the brace T to which said swivel-slide is attached. The slat G fits between the U shaped ends, so that the swivel-slide can move on said slat, while it is free to turn on its pivot in on der to accommodate itself to the varying position of the brace to which it is attached. The center brace T is pivoted'tothe end of the slat A opposite to that to which the end brace I is pivoted, and said center brace connects with each of the slats B O D E F G, respectively, by means of a swivel slide V, constructed as above described. The center brace U is pivoted to the end of the slat G opposite to that to which the end brace M is pivoted, and it (said center brace) connects with each of the slats F E D O B A, respectively, by means of a swivel-slide V.
The two center braces, T U, are connected at about the middle of their length by means of a; pivot, b. The end brace N is pivoted at its outer end to slat B and at its inner end to the center brace T. The end brace O is pivoted at its outer end to the slat O and on its inner end to the endbrace P. The end brace P is pivoted at its outer end to the slat D and at its inner end to the center brace T, and it carries a swivelbrace V, which embraces the slat G. The end brace Q is pivoted at its outer end to the slat D and at its inner end to the center brace U, and it carries a swivel-slide V, which embraces the slat E. The end brace R is pivoted at its outer end to the slat Eand at its inner end to the end brace Q. The end brace S is pivoted at its outer end to the slat F and at its inner end to the center brace U.
On the bottom slat A are secured two elastic 5 is shown in Fig. 3, and since the top slats X slat Y.
Between the bracket A and the slat A is placed a distance-piece, a, (see Fig. 4,) so that the swivel-slide V at the end of the center brace U can pass beneath said bracket, and the bracket G is mounted in the same manner to allow the swivel-slide V at the end of the center brace T to pass beneath it, such being requisite in order to be able to fold up the spring-bed to the position shown in Fig. 2. The springs H are also mounted in such a manner that the swivel-slides V can move past them.
WVhen the bed is unfolded, as shown in Fig. 1, it is retained in position by the center braces T U and the end braces N O PQ R S, and it can only be folded by pressing against those ends of the slats A G to which the center braces T and U are pivoted.
If desired, the end braces N omitted.
The end braces I K L M are applied to impart steadiness to that end of the bed on which they are situated.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the bottom slats O R S may be and with the springs mounted thereon, of the center braces T U, crossing each other and pivoted to the outer slats on opposite sides, and connected to the intermediate slats by the swivel-slides V, the end braces P and Q, connected at one end to the center slat and at the other end to the center braces T U, and the end braces I K L M, for holding the opposite ends of the slats in position, substantially as described.
' 2. The combination, with the bottom slats and with thesprings mounted thereon, of the brackets A A G G the top slats X Y, the center braces T U, and the end braces I K L M, the braces being connected with the slats, and the several parts constructed and arranged substantially as described.
The combination, with the bottom slats and with the springs mounted thereon, of the center braces T U, pivoted to the outer slats on opposite sides and connected to the intermediate slats by the swivel-slides V, the endbraces P and Q, connected at one end to the center slat and at the other end to the center braces T U, and the end braces I K L M, for holding the slats in position at the opposite end, substantially as described.
