Description

Filed March 13, 1958 JNVENTOR.
Ema-'2 4. 5721M mit..- w,
ADVERTISING DISPLAY Elmer L. Stein, Milwaukee, Wis., assignor to Eye-Beam Displays, Inc, Milwaukee, Wis., a corporation of Wiscousin This invention relates to an advertising display.
In my Patent No. 2,805,504, it was pointed out that flanges on the sides of a tensioned web perform an unexpected function in that they not only stiffen the web, but also absorb or distribute tension strains which would otherwise be localized by the means acting parallel to such flanges to subject the web to tension.
The present invention involves the further discovery that even greater web stability is achieved in all directions in the plane of the web if the side flanges (which generally parallel the direction in which the tensioning force is exerted) are double folded, being so scored that after a first fold is made longitudinally of the panel, another fold is made directly at the margin of the panel. The first fold seems to have the elfect of maintaining flat the flange which is proximate the panel, thereby precluding such flange from assuming a wavy form along the side of the panel. The net result is to improve the overall appearance of the displays in addition to further panel stability.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a view in rear three quarter perspective of a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail view of the blank from which the display panel of Fig. l was folded.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view taken in section on line.3--3 of Fig. 1. a
In accordance with the prior patent above identifi the display panel 5 is provided with flanges 6 and 7 at its top and bottom, these being folded rearwardly and used as anchor-ages for the bowed strut 8. While a variety of means of connecting the strut with the flanges 6 and 7 are known and used, the simplest is the arrangement illustrated in which flanges 6 and 7 are both provided with slots at 9 into which the ends of the strut 8 are inserted to seat in the bight between the flanges and the panel while, at the same time, the strut serves to hold the flanges 2,934,846 Patented May 3, 1950 "ice 6 and 7 folded rearwardly at acute angles to the panel. In the preferred construction, the strut 8 has integral portions folded to provide an easel at 10.
In accordance with the present invention, the blank from which the panel and its flanges are formed is provided not only with score lines at 11 and 12 upon which the flanges 6 and 13 are foldably connected to the panel, but there is an additional score line at '14 upon which the auxiliary flange 15 is folded at an angle to the base flange 13. The angles of the various flanges are not necessarily as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the illustrated positions being merely by way of exemplification. The auxiliary flange 15 functions to maintain the base flange 13 substantially planiform throughout its length, eliminating the wavy configuration to which the flange 13 might otherwise be forced by the tensioning of the panel.
Because the base flange 13 at each side of the panel is held planiform, it is better able to distribute the stresses developed by the bowed st-rut 8, or otherwise, and tending to distort the panel. In almost all displays of moderate size, these stresses are adequately distributed by the side flanges shown in my former patent, this being true even though such side flanges become somewhat wavy in the process. However, it is particularly desirable in very large displays of this type that the side flanges themselves be stilfened, being thereby better able to perform their desired functions in maintaining the panel 5 perfectly flat. The elimination of waviness in the side flanges is an incidental further advantage enhancing the appearance of the product.
I claim:
An advertising display comprising the combination with a flexible panel of generally rectangular form having four marginal flanges projecting rearwardly of the panel at an angle thereto, means extending between two opposed side flanges for subjecting the panel to tension, and additional flanges in folded connection with the side flanges of the panel and projecting toward each other behind the panel from the opposite sides thereof and in general parallelism with the direction in which the panel is tensioned.
