Be it known that I, HENRY A. CHURCH, of the city and county of Providence7 and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamental Chains; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, rei erence being had to the accompanying drawings, form part of this specification.

This invention has reference to an improvement in that class of ornamental chains known in the art as roller-chains-that is to say, a chain made up by securing a large number Vof 'small rings or units side by side to form the width required, each set of which overlaps the next set lengthwise.

The invention consists in providing the units 'with two or more holes through which the binding-wires pass, so as to secure the same together and prevent the units from turning,

- and in the peculiar and novel construction of n represents a number of the central units provided with two or more holes, or holes of such form as will iirmly hold the units on the binding-wires. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of one form of a modification. Fig. Sis another form of a modification, in which the binding-wires' are secured to the cap instead of to the units, and the unit is placed over the cap. In roller-chains, when the chain is made up and colored, it requires to be polished. In polishing, the portions of the units exposed willreceive a fine polish, while the portions of the units out of the reach of the polishing device are not so polished. As long as the units remain in the position in which they were when polished, the appearance of the chainis preserved. As soon, however, as the units or any of them are partially turned, the appearance of the chain is injured by presenting in places the unpolished surface of the units.

Y I am aware that such units have before my present invention been provided with elongated holes, for the purpose of better securing the same against rotation, as is shown and described in Letters Patent No. 241,189, granted to me May 10, 1881. The first part of my present invention refers to holes constructed to iixedly hold' the units, in which the wires nearly fill the holes or the ends of the holes, as I nd in practice that an elongated hole may allow sufcient playto expose small portions-of the units not polished.

The side units, B B, as well as the caps C C, for closing the units, may be ornamcnted by stamping in various ways, as is shown in Figs.

The caps C C may be secured by pressing the metal of the units around the cap, or by securing the same with solder.' 4 The form ofthe cap and the unit when united must be of the same appearance and outline as the closed unit on the opposite side, so as to make both sides of the chain alike.
