MACHINE FOR POLISHING LEATHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,308, dated February 12, 1854.

To all whom, it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, ADoLrHE CERE-LANZEN- BERG, of Paris, in the Republic of France,

lhave invented certain new and useful Imthe invention consists of a box or casing having an opening in the top, and of a bufiing or polishing wheel that projects through said opening. At each side of the opening, in the top of the inclosing-box, is an upwardly-projecting guide-piece, which directs the current of air onto the buffer, and also serves as a guard to prevent the contact of `the skins upon the table with the wheel.

Referring to the drawings, A represents an outer casing or box, the top of which forms a table for the operation, preferably of rectangular shape. Within the casing is mounted, in bearings of suitable standards, B B, a shaft,- G, which is of sufficient length to pass through and beyond one of the end walls of the casing A.` The projecting portion ofthe shaft C, beyond the casing A, is supplied with pulleys c c, a tight and loose one, the former being the means of transmitting rotary motion to the shaft C. The buffing-wheel D is so mounted on the shaftC that a segment of the same projects through an opening, a, of the top of the casing. ThecasingA furthermore is suppliedat the bottom with an opening or openings, a', which admits the introduction of air to the inside of the box. The polishing or bufing wheel D is constructed with radial arms, to which is applied a rim of oval crosssection. The rapidly=revolving wheelD draws in the air through the bottom opening and ejects itwith considerable force through the narrow spaces t, formed by the top opening at both sides of the polishing-wheel D. The aircurrents thus obtained cool the leather while it is held by the operator in contact with the polishing-wheel, so that it 4is not injured bythe heat generated by the friction with the 6o bufiing -wheel. Should the space fi at `both sides of the polishing-wheel not be sufficient,

an additional aperture or apertures could be made in the top of the casing A. The top of the casing A, which, as stated before, forms a 6 5 table for the workman, is further supplied with guards or fenders e e at each side of the polishing-wheel D,which give the properbearing to manipulate the leather and expose it to the action of the polishing-wheel.

In the construction of the bufng or polishing wheel D, I preferably use metal for the hub, arms, and rim, and cover the latter with gutta-percha or other elastic material shown at f which possesses at the same time sufficient resistance. Over this elastic material is stretched flannel, felt, or other fibrous material, g, in one or more thicknesses,and laced or otherwise fastened at the inner side of the rim. This outer covering can be readily removed when it becomes dirty or worn.

The machine will thoroughly and uniformly polish the surface of the leather in a much shorter time than by hand without making one portion brighter than another, While the leather is at the same time kept cool, and thereby protected against the injurious influence of heat.

I am aware that bufting-wheels mounted in an open frame have been used, and also machines for Whitening and shaving leather having an abrading-roller mounted on posts and provided with an exhaust-fan at the rear,` with a separate belt and pulley for operating the fan. I do not claim a machine like these. The wheel of my machine is provided with arms, which serve as a fan-blower and cooler as well as abuffer. A

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.V In a buffi-ng or polishing machine, the combination of la polishing or bufng wheel IOO providedwith radial arms anda polishingf face, an inclosing-boX having an induction airopening at the bottom and an eduotion airopening at the top, and guards arranged at 5 the sides of the top opening, which serve to direct the currents of air against the buffer,

and also serve to guard the Wheel against contact with the leather upon the table.

2. In a buffng or polishing machine, a bufro fing-Wheel having radial arms and a polishingface, in combination with a table or platform having an opening provided With guards at its sides for directing the air forced through the opening by the arms of the Wheel, sub- I 5 stantially as described. y

3. A bufling-Wheel having radial arms, and

a face of oval cross-section composed of a layer of rubber and an outer covering of cloth, in combination with a box having an air-induction opening at its bottom and an eduction air-opening at its top, provided with guards at its sides for the purpose of directing the air- ADOLPHE CERF-LANZENBERGr.
