MACHINE FOR FINISHING H EEL-BOTTOMS.
SPECIFICATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,604, dated February 12, 1884.
' Application filed May 29, 182 3. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MERRILL A. TYLER and DANIEL S. SMITH, of Rockland, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements iii-Machines for Finishing Heel-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention hasfor its object to provide an improved machine for finishing the bottoms of boot and shoe heels by filing and sandpapering the same; and it consists, as a whole, in an organized machine embodying a metallic cylinder-file and a roll coated with sandpaper or other abrasive material, said rolls [5 being mounted on the same arbor, and adapted to operate on 'the bottom of a heel presented by the operator successively to the cylinder-file and the sand-paper roll, there being rests or bearing-surfaces on either side of the cylinder-file, said surfaces being adjustable,
both as to the angleat which they stand relatively to a given horizontal plane and as to- 3 5 in section. Fig. 5 represents an enlarged end view of thecylinder-file and adjustable heelsupports. Fig. 6 represents a section online as 00, Fig. 5. Fig. 7 represents a view of the cylinder-file detached. I The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, A represents a suitable supporting-standard, having bearings for a horizontal arbor, B, which has a pulley, O, belted v 5 to a pulley on a driving-shaft, D.
To one end of the arborB is secured a metallic cylinder or roll, E, having its periphery corrugated, grooved, or indented, to form file-teeth, which may be produced by groova leather surface.
-of the rolls E F on the bottom of a heel.
ing the cylinder diagonally in two directions, 5o
as shown in Fig. 7, or by any of the methods used for forming file-teeth adapted to cut away To the opposite end of the arbor B is attached a roll, F, coated with sandpaper or other abrasive material adapted to buff a leather surface.
"Over the rolls E F are hoods G G, connected by trunks H H with the casing J of an exhaust-fan, I, which is rotated by a belt-connection with the driving'shaft, and removes the powdered leather produced by the action The frame A has a vertical fiange, K, close to the inner end of the cylinder-file E, the arbor B passing through an aperture, L, in the said flange, as shown in Fig. 6. I
To the flange K is secured by screw-bolts M M a flat plate, N, having an annular boss, 0, through which the arbor B passes, said boss having an aperture, P, considerably larger than the arbor, so that the plate N can be raised and lowered independently of the arbor, the plate being provided with vertical slots B B, through which the bolts M M pass, that secure the plate N to the flange K.
S represents a hood or casing formed on a plate. T, which is fitted to the boss 0, and is secured to the plate N by bolts U U, passing through curved slots U U in the plate T, said slots enabling the hood S to be partially ro- 8o tated on the boss 0 when the bolts U U are loosened. The hood Spartially surrounds the cylinder-file, and is of aboutthe same length as the latter. In the lower portion of the hood S is an opening, which permits the lower portion of the periphery of the cylinder-file to project from said hood. On the opposite sides of said opening plates V V are affixed to the hood S by screws W W, passing through transverse slots a a in the plates V, whereby said plates are made adjustable to vary the width of the opening through which the cylinder'file projects. The plates V V are in line with each other, and constitute rests for the bottom of a heel at opposite sides of the cylinder-file. The
hood S is so adjusted that the plates or restsV V will stand diagonally, their inclination being upward from the rear to the front of the machine, this being found to be the 1nostconvenient position.
In operating on a boot or shoe with this machine, the operator presses the bottom of the heel on the rests V V, thereby subjecting the heel to the action of the cylinder-file, which quickly removes all the protuberances on the bottom of the heel and reduces it to a fiat eondition, also rasping off the ends of the nails, if any there be. After the heel has been sufficiently rasped or reduced by the cylinder-file, it is subjected to the action of the roll F,whieh imparts a smoother surface than that left by the cylindeniile. The vertical adjustability of the hood S (allowed by the slots R R and 1 in the plate N) enables the degree of projection of the cylinder-file from the hood S to be regulated so as to make said file cut more or less deeply into the heel. The adaptability of the hood S to be partially rotated enables the inclination of the rests V V to be regulated to suit different operators. The lateral adjustability of the rests V V enables the space be tween them to be varied to suit differentsizes of heels. The hoods G G are pivoted at b I) to the ends of the trunks H H, so that they canbe readily raised to expose thehood S and the roll F.
If desired, our improved machine may be used for the bottoms of soles as well as heels.
\Vhen the file is intended for use on the shank portion of the sole, the rests V V should be removed and the file allowed to project from its easing S to a greater extent than is shown in the drawings, so that the concave portion of the shank can be presented to the file without obstruction by the rests.
A jack, J may be employed to support the boot or shoe while the bottom of theheel is being presented to the file, as shown in Fig. 3. 0
The jack is adjustably secured by a clamp, J to a standard, J so that the boot or shoe can be inclined to correspond with the inclination of the rests V V. The standard J is pivotally connected to a pedal-lever, J", which is pivoted to the standard A. The operator is thus enabled to oscillate the jack and present to the tile all parts of the surface "to be operated on thereby.
Ve clailn- 1. The combination of the cylinder-file and the rests V V, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the cylinder-file, of the adjustable restsV V, substantially as described, and for the purpose stated.
The combination, with the cylinder-file, of the adjustable rests V V, the hood S, to which said rests are secured, the slotted plate N, and the flange K, the parts being held and adjusted by setscrews, and all being arranged substantially as described.
4-. The combination, in an organized machine, of a rotary cylinder-file, the guardplates arranged to gage the depth of cut of said file, and ashoe-holdingjaek pivoted toastandard, as described, so as to present the heel properly to said file, substantially as shown and described.
I11 testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this th day ofDecember, 1882.
