Description
.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. PENFIELD, OF WVILLOUGHBY, OHIO.
CLAY-CRUSH I NG ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,270, dated February 12, 1884. Application filed December 21,1883. (No model.)
- To aZZ whom it may concern:
. sists in certain features of construction and in a set of rollers that will work with equal facilstones with whichthe clay was incumbered.
Be it known that I, JAMEsW. PENFIELD, of WVilloughby, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clay-Crushing Bolt ers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in clay-crushing rollers.
The object of the invention is to provide rollers thathave each a continuous spiral corrugation extending from end to end of the roller, but each of the same lead, either right or left handed, as maybe preferred, so that as the rollers turntoward each other or in opposite directions the corrugations will cross or pass each other when the two rollers are moving with the same speed or with different speeds.
With this object in View myinvention concombination of parts hereinafter described,
and pointed out in the claim.
. This invention is designed as an improvement on a device for which I have already obtained Letters Patent, granted November 27,
It is found to be impracticable to construct ity on all of the different kinds of clay that are used throughout the countryin the manufacture of brick, tile, and for other purposes. The former device patented as aforesaid was found effective in certain kinds of clay that required the cutting or breaking of the clay, that was accomplished by the continuous crossing of the corrugations and for removing the The present invention is designed to pulverize the same kind of clay Where the crossing of the corrugations to cut or break the clay is essential, but where there are no stones to be removed. The object is attained by using rollers with spiral corrugations, but with the same lead, both either right or left handed, as
may be preferred. As the rollers turn in opposite directions the corrugations cross each other as in the former device, but Without the objectionable feature of the said former ,devioeto Wit, revolving one roller at a high speed.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a plan view of my improved rollers.
A and A are rollers provided with the en gaging gears a and a, and with the drivingpulley B. The respective shafts of the rollers are journaled in the boxes 0,-that are secured to any desired supporting-frame, andare made adjustable, so that the rollers may be set at The threads or corrugations may be fine or coarse, as desired, and for pulverizing the tougher kinds of clay, that are free from stone, will be found very efficient.
That I claim is Clay-crushing rollers provided each with a continuous spiral corrugation running from end to end of the roller, the corrugations having the same lead on each roller, either right or lefthanded, as preferred, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 10th day of December, 1883.
' JAMES w. PENFIELD.
