UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JAMES H. BRIGHT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TOOL FOR FINI'SHING JOINTS OF BRICK WALLS, 84C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,029, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed November 7, 1885. Serial No. 182,133. (Xo model.)
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMEs H. BRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usefulImprovementsin Press- Brick Jointers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in brick-layers tools, and is designed to produce a device, technically known as a press-brick jointer, that shall nish fresh mortar joints so that the joint shall be protected from the action of water running down the side of the building.
The device consists of a handle with a thin slotted head, having a marking-edge of proper shape, and rollers having their axle adjustable in said slot.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a side view of the device; Fig. 2, a plan View of the same, and Fig. 3 a detail section.
The handle A, by which the device is held and operated, has one end widened to one side and attened, as shown at B. The bearingedge of the said end B is preferably convex, but may be flat or other suitable shape. The convex edge is preferred, since it will form a concave surface on the mortar joint, the device being used before the said joint has hardened, and thus presenting a form of joint not liable to the action of any water that may find its way down the sides of the building.
In the widened end B is a slot, C, preferably arranged diagonally, as shown, and the con- Vex or bearing edge of said end forms an are of a circle or a near approach thereto. Through the said slot C passes the axle D, on which are contained the rollers E, one on each side of the said end B, and caused to rest at a short distance therefrom by the interposed shoulders F on collars G. One end of said axle D extends beyond the roller E, and is screw-threaded for the reception of the thumbnut H, which serves as a means for retaining said axle D at any point in the slot O, and so enables the adjustment of the device to any desirable depth of operation.
In operation the rollers E rest on each side of the joint, traveling on the bricks or stones forming the walls, while the end B travels between the said bricks or stones and depresses the mortar of the joint below the surface, the said joint also operating as a guide,
The device is adaptable to any class of Work in which an operation analogous to scoring is desirable.
I claiml. A brick-layers tool for the purpose described, consisting of asuitable handle with a scoringhead and rollers on each side thereof adjustable to or from the bearing-edge of said head, substantially as specified.
2. A brick-layers tool consisting of a suitable handle with attened and slotted head, an axle with a threaded extension passing through said slot, rollers on said axle on each side of said head, and a nut for holding said axle in the slot, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A brick-layers tool consisting of a suitable handle, scoring-head, and anti-friction bearings, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES I-I. BRIGHT.
Vitnesses:
