CRUSHING OR GRlNDING MILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,197, dated January 23, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY JAMES RALPH PAMPHILON, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Congleton, in the county of Chester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crushing or Grinding Mills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of crush ing orgrinding mills in which one of the grinding faces is practically a hollow cylinder,
against the inner face of which a series of rotating grinding faces bear owing to the action of centrifugal force.
To clearly explain the invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents an end elevation of one form of the apparatus, the end plate and driving pulley being removed, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on the line z z of Fig. 1.
In this form of apparatus it is proposed to have two series of rotating grinders a, a, revolving upon separate shafts b,b, in opposite directions. Each series consists of say three grinders a grooved or let into the revolving carrier c in such a manner that as the said carrier is revolved the grinders are thrown out on their guidesd by centrifugal force, and bear against the internal face of the cylinder f which may if desired have a slight inward taper from either side, the rotating grinders being made to accord therewith. If the oppositely rotating series of grinders a are brought sufficiently close together a portion of the material will be acted on between them.
The material to be ground may be fed through a trough g to which a rising and falling or shaking motion may be imparted by means of a rod h and eccentric t', the material after grinding being discharged from the machine by the trough or pipe j. Where separate driving would be inconvenient in lieu of mounting the carriers c on separate shafts b two or more may be mounted .on the same shaft, in which case all would of course revolve in the same direction, and instead of grooving the grinders a they may be rectangular in cross section, and slide in boxes instead of on rails in the carriers c, but in this case it is impracticable to bring the two sets of grinders so close together as it will be evident that they would then be separated by the thickness of the two adjacent box ends and the apparatus is consequently less advantageously worked.
Vhen the internal cylinder and the rotating grinders are formed of stone the mill will be found applicable for the grinding or crushing of cements, paints, potters materials and other hard substances,which preferably 'must be free from all metal particles, and for this purpose the grinders a, a, and the cylinder f, are either of stone or stone faced, but as stone is not adapted for the transmission of power, the shaft b, and the carriers c, are made of metal.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
said guides and a surrounding cylinder limiting the outward movement of said guides, substantially as set forth.
