UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD IV. MILLER, OF VASSAR, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO EDYVARD H. TAYLOR, JAMES TOL BERT, DAVID G. SLAFTER RAOHEL MILLER, AND BRADFORD MILLER, ALL OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING PAVING-BLOCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,672, dated August 3, 1886.
Application tiled March 26, 1886. Serial No. 196,702. (No model.)
, To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD W. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vassar, in the county of Tuscola, State of Michigan, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Cutting Paving-Blocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this IO specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine for cutting pavingblocks with my improve ment attached. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
1 My invention relates to that class of machines used in cutting hexagonal-shaped blocks of different sizes for paving purposes; and it consists of the combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the eXact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents an annular 2 cast-metal bed-plate having a central opening, A, and provided on its upper surface with six adjustable knives, B, of the peculiar shape 7 shown in Figs. 1 and 2. These knives are pivoted to the bed-plate near their butts, at
0 the point a, in any convenient manner, so as to move freely on their pivots, with a view of adjusting the size of the central opening between the cuttingblades to the size of the blocks desired. Around the bed-plate passes 3 5 a metal band, 0, to which are attached the slotted lugs b, to receive the butt-ends of each of the knives, as shown in Fig. 1. This band O is freely moved in its circle a sufficient distance to operate the cutting portion. of the 0 blades and cause them to increase or lessen the central opening between the knives, through which the paving-blocks have to pass in being cut to the proper shape and size.
To the band C is secured the lever D,for op- 5 crating and moving the band to the right or left. As all the knives are attached to the band,it is evident that the operator in moving the lever moves all the knives simultaneously and equally, so that the hexagonal figure formed by the cutting-blades is preserved, so whatever the size of the opening maybe.
From this description of my invention it will be evident that the blocks or pieces of Wood being subjected to pressure to force them through the opening between the knives are thereby readily split into hexagonal forms of any desired size, and that all the sap may be readily removed from all kinds of wood. It is also evident that the lever for operating the knives may be vertical or horizontal, and any convenient or desirable power may be applied to the end of said lever to movethe band C, and thereby adjust the size of the opening between the knives. If it be desirable, springs may be added to hold the knives in positionwithout departing from the spirit of my invention. It is also evident that by grinding the knives to a beveled edge the blocks may be cut slightly tapering, so as to form a crowning road-bed. 7c
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The bed-plate A, having an open center, A, in combination with adjustable knives B, pivoted to said bed-plate, and having their inner ends so constructed in relation to each other as to form a hexagonal, opening between them, substantially as herein described.
2. The bed-plate A,havinga central opening, A, in combination with the adjustable knives B, pivoted to the bed-plate, the band O,encircling said plate and having slotted lugs 12, engaging the outer ends of the knives, and a levcr, D, secured to the band and operating the knives, substantially as herein described.
