Description

(ModeL) A. W. MILLER.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING THE STEM IN THE PENDANT OF STEM WINDING WATCHES.
No. 293.267. Patented Feb. '12, 1884.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()EEICE.
ALEXANDER IV. MILLER, .01? BELLEFONTAINE, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING THE STEM IN THE PENDANT 0F STEM-WINDING WATCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 293,267, dated February 12, 1884.
Application filed August 6, 1383. (Modeh) To all who/wit may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER XV. MIL- LEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bellet'ontaine, in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Holding the Stem in the Pendant of Stem-\Vinding atches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a device to securely fasten the stem of a stem-win ding watch in the pendant, to prevent the losing of the crown.
Figure l is a sectional view of a watclrpendant, with the interior mechanism in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the locking-collar.
Fig. '3 is a side view at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. i is a top view of the same.
A is the watch-case; B, the pendant; C, the screw; D, the crown; G, a collar, which is se cured on the inside of the pendant B byscrew O or otherwise, and covered by crown D; K, bow; L, spring-tongues; M, pinchers; N,.stem.
The object of my invention is to conceal an attachment in the pendant of a stem-winding watch that will positively hold the stem in position, and not be liable to become deranged and allow the stem and crown to lose oft". In
the present style of fastening the stem inviz.,
and attached afterward.
cannot fit securely, and is liable to come out and allow the crown to lose off. By my plan the screw is hid out of sight, and placed in such position and screwed into a metallic collar on the inside, so that it is impossible to lose out. All the stems in use have a shoulder near their middle, and are made separate from the crowns I attach my collar G to the inside of the pendant by screw C through the top of pendant, or by other means. The spring-tongues L yield when the stem is pushed into the pendant and allow collar H to pass, when they contract and rest on top of the shoulder, preventing the withdrawal of the stem by pulling or jolting. XVhen it is desired to withdraw the stem, the points of pinchers M,which are set uneven, are inserted in sockets F and the tongues spread until the collar will slip through. Pins or other means may be used for the purpose of spreading the tongues.
I do not claim the stem held in the pendant by a screw or a spring, broadly. It will also be noticed that myholding-screws do not come in contact with the stem when the latter is winding, or at other times, and are not therefore liable to be worn or loosened; but
hat I claim is The combination, with pendant B and stem N, of the collar G, secured positively in the pendant, and having spring-tongue L, as and for the purpose set forth.
ALEXANDER IV. MILLER.
