WILLIAM H. ROYSTER, OF MIDWAY, `VIRGINIA.V
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,195, dated February 5, 1884.
'Application liled August 10, 1883. (No model.)
T all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. RoYs'rER, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Midway, in the county of Halifax and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ghurns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same, reference being `had to the accompanying draw ings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis aside elevation of my improved churn. Fig. 2 is a plan or top View of the same, and Figa?) is an end view. f
Similar letters of reference indicateorresponding parts in all the igures.
My invention has rel ation to vibratingbody churns; and it consists in thefimproved construction of thesame, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
pieces, I, and end pieces, J. lThe vibrating frame I J is supported upon four springs, K, one at each corner, the lower ends'of which are iixed rmly in the cross-bars L of frame A. The sides I I are recessed at M to form boxes or bearings for the trunnions of the cylindrical churn-body or cream-receptacle O,
which is made of glass or stone ware, so that4 it may be readily kept clean and sweet. l? is the cover, which is fixed in place by a bindingscrew, Q.
R is a set-screw, which is inserted through one of the end pieces of frame I J, bearing with its inner end against the body of the cylindrical cream-receptacle O. The bottom -part of the churn is made 'heavier than the top part, preferably by placing the trunnions by releasing screw R the churn will of itself .nearer to the top than to the bottom, so that drop into the vertical position shown in dot- 1 ted lines, when, by removing the cover, it may be tilted so as to pour out the buttermilk into a receptacle placed below, after which the butter can easily be removed. The butter will form inthe shape of a ball inside ofthe churnbody O, eXpell-ing every particle of butterA reciprocating frame whenever desired by releasing the spring-catches S from the trunnions, said catches consisting of pieces of spring-wire, one end of which is bent into a hook shape, and fastened to the sides Iby staples T, while the other end is bent at right angles, and provided with a projection, U, by taking hold of which the'catch can readily be released or uns'hipped from the trunnion.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States- 1. The combination of the frame A, drive? wheelsB, D, and F, shaft E, pitman H, vibrating frame I J, fixedvand supported upon -the springs K, and having the boxes M and set-screw. R, cylindrical churn-body O, having trunnions N, and spring-catches S, the whole constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a vibrating-body churn, the combination of the Vibrating spring-supported frame J i having the boxes or bearings M, churn`- body O, having trunnions N, set-screw R, and spring-catches S, substantially as and for` the purpose shown and set forth. Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my i own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLiAM n. novs'rnaV Vitnesses:
