Be it known that 1, JAMES JEWELL, of the village of Grandville, Kent county, Michigan, have invented a new and useful-Improvement in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

' Myinvention, relates tothe construction of a'pipe-wrench designed for the use of gasfitters, plumbers, and others having occasion to work iron pipes, and may be made of any suitable size or of. any suitable material.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is an end view,of the strap E. I5 Similar letters of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the several figures. The letter A represents the main toothed jaw of the wrench, and F is the shank thereof, having teeth upon its-upper surface. The outer end of this shank forms thehandle of the implement.

Bis a block having on its under surface teeth which mesh with the teeth of the shank. This block is socketed, as shown, and it is provided with a shoulder, b, and extension I).

Erepresents theloop, which is passed on the shank of the'wrench, and it is provided \vitha pin, 8, by means of which the extension bf of the block B is pivoted thereto, whereby said block may be moved backward or forward on the shank with the loop.

The letter Odenotes the gripping-jaw, pivoted to a pin, a, in the upper end of the loop, andseated in the socket of the blockB, and it is provided wit-h a shoulder, c, which abuts 1 against the shoulder b of the block when pressure is brought to bear upon the jaws A thus relieving the pin a from strain. This jaw is also removable backward or forward with the block B by means of its being pivo oted to the loop. The .toothed block is held in contact with the teeth of the shank by 1 means of the wedge D engaging the loop and under surface of the shank, and it is provided with a downward projection, 2', to pre 5 vent its slipping out from the loop. I attach importance to the fact that the under or grip ping jaw, G, is provided with a shoulder to engage the shoulder of the block, whereby the strain is upon the teeth of the said shoul- 5o der and against the shank by the pressure of the teeth on the block.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent- The pipe-wrench herein described,.consist- 5 5 ing of the toothed jaw A, having thetoothed shank F, the toothed block B, pivoted to the pin 8 of the loop E, and'having the shoulder 12 and socket, as shown, the jaw 'O, pivoted to JAMES JEWELL.
