3 Claims. (Cl. 63-61) This invention relates to articles of personal adornment and more particularly to pendants, brooches, plaques, medallions and the like.
Previously described articles of this type are ordinarily of a fixed configuration, size, shape, color or ornamentation.
This normally requires a large and varied collection of such pieces of jewelry, in order to provide a variety suflicient to satisfy the personal taste and fancy of the wearer.
A primary object of my invention is to provide such an article of jewelry with readily interchangeable parts which may be quickly and easily assembled into various combinations and artistic arrangements in order to complement the kind, type and color of the costume with which it is to be worn.
Further objects and a fuller understanding of the invention will hereinafter appear from the following description of a preferred embodiment illustrative of the invention and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a front view of the assembled piece,

Fig. 7 is a front view of a circular ornamental piece.
The device consists of a closed outer retaining band having positioning means on its inner periphery for receiving and holding in place the exterior convolutions of a contracted fiat spiral coil spring. The interior convolutions of the spring also have means for holding an ornament or decorative piece within said convolution when it is in an expanded state. The retaining band may be rigid or flexible and circular or elliptic in shape. The ornamental piece may also be circular or elliptic. The piece may be adapted to be worn as a pendant, brooch or bracelet.
Referring to the drawings, the assembled piece of jewelry 1, therein shown, as illustrative of one embodiment of my invention comprises an interchangeable retaining band 2, a fiat spiral coil spring 3 and an interchangeable ornamental piece 4. The band 2 has a suspension ring 5 or a pin on the back, not shown, when it is to be used as a brooch. The outer periphery 6 of band 2 may be U-shaped with sides 7 and inner contacting surface 8. The spring 3 has an exterior convolution 9 with an end 10 and an interior convolution 11 with an end 12. The interior convolution 11 has matched or staggered protuberances 13 at right angles to its edges. The ornamental piece 4 has an outer periphery 14 and ornamentation 15 on one or both sides. The periphery of the exterior convolution 9, when the spring 3 has its both ends 10 and 12 free, is greater than the periphery of the inner contacting surface 8 of the band 2.

In assembly, the inner convolution 11 with end 12 of spring 3 is expanded sufficiently to allow the periphery 14 of ornamental piece 4 to be inserted between the protuberances 13. Releasing the pressure on this convolution 11 and end 12 allows the inner portion of the spring to contract, firmly holding the ornamental piece 4 in place within the said inner convolution and between the protuberances 13. The outer convolution 9 and end 10 allows the spring to expand and be in firm contact with the inner contacting surface 8 of band 2. The band 2 of the ornamental piece 4 may be either circular or elliptic.
While the preferred embodiment of my invention has been described in detail, it will be understood that I do not Wish to be limited to the particular construction set forth, since various changes in the form, materia1, proportions, and arrangement of parts, and in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, or destroying any of the advantages contained in the same, heretofore described and defined in the following claims.
I claim:
1. An article of personal adornment consisting of a closed outer retaining band provided with inner integral positioning sides and retaining means; a single fiat continuous spiral coil spring removably positioned under contraction within said band, having its entire outer convolution in engagement with said retaining means of said band and provided on both edges of its inner convolution with inner retaining means; and an ornament removably and entirely positioned within said inner convolution and in between said inner retaining means of said spring, the perimeter of the inner convolution of said spring with both ends free being smaller than the perimeter of said inner ornament, the interior convolutions of said spring and said positioned ornament being in free suspension.
2. An article of personal adornment consisting of a closed outer retaining band, a single fiat continuous spiral coil spring and an inner circular ornament, the diameter of the outer convolutions of said spring with both ends free being greater than the diameter of said outer band, the diameter of the inner convolution of said spring with both ends free being smaller than the diameter of said inner ornament, said outer band being provided with integral dual side means completely positioning said spring in said band when the outer convolutions of said spring are under contraction, the inner convolutions of said spring being provided with dual side means positioning both sides of said ornament within said convolutions when said inner convolutions are under expansion, the interior convolutions of said spring and said positioned ornament being in free suspension, the Width of said convolutions of said spring being less than that of said band and greater than the thickness of said ornament.
3. An article of personal adornment consisting of a closed outer retaining band, a single fiat continuous spiral coil spring and an inner circular ornament; said band being provided with inner integral dual depending side means removably positioning said spring under contraction within the inner periphery of said band; the interior convolutions of said spring being provided with dual side means removably positioning said ornament entirely within said convolutions when said convolutions are under expansion; the interior convolutions of said spring and said positioned ornament being in free suspension.
