Claims. (Cl. 224-5) This invention relates toharnesses and more particularly to a harness for carrying an umbrella.

It is an object of the present invention to provide an adjustable umbrella holder vhaving means for selectively securing an umbrella in a collapsed storage position and in an upright operative position.

Another object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable umbrella holder that will comfortably tit upon the shoulders of the person using the device and which can be used to carry the umbrella without the use ofthe hands.

Still a further object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable umbrella holder of the above type that is `completely adjustable so as to comfortably t upon the shoulders of any person.

Referring now more in detail to the drawing, an adjustable umbrella holder assembly 10 made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a pair offinverted substantially U-shaped sides laterally connected in spaced -apart relationship by means of connecting braces 14. One such brace 14 connects the front legs 16 of the inverted U-shaped sides, while auother one of such braces 14 connects the rear legs 17 thereof.

The upper end of each of the front and rear legs is secured, such as by screws 22 which extend through threaded bores 23 to a slide 20. These slides 20 are slidably supported within a channel slide guide 21. Tabs 24 integral with each of the slides 20 extend upwardly 2,926,826 Patented Mar. 1, 1960 ice in spaced parallel relationship with the forward `tab having a threaded bore 25 for threadedly receiving a longitudinal adjustment bolt 26 therethrough and the rearward tab having a bore 27 facilitating free longitudinal movement therein of bolt 26, and, each bolt possesses a pair of threadable nuts 34 as locking means for preventing longitudinal movement of bolt 26. It will thus be recognized, as is clearly shown in Figure 6 of the drawing, that by rotating the head 26 of the bolt 26, the upper ends of each front and

16, 17 of each inverted U-shaped side member can be moved closer together or further apart, so as to adjust the diS- tance between the upper ends of the associated front land rear legs to fit the harness to the shoulders of a person of any particular size.

A flexible strap member 28 is secured to each rear leg 17 for tying an umbrella 33 thereto in a collapsed position. A bracket means, in the form of an upwardly opening receptacle 30, secured to a swivel ball joint 36, is movably nested in housing cup 37 which is secured to one of the front legs 16 by screws 38. This receptacle includes a longitudinal bore 29 which slidably receives a shank 32 of the umbrella to support it in the upright position illustrated in Figure 2. A set screw 31 extending transversely through the receptacle 30 into the path of movement of the umbrella shank within the bore 29 is operative to secure the umbrella in place without the necessity of having to hold it with the hands.

It will now be recognized that this umbrella holder assembly may be used to selectively carry the umbrella in the collapsed storage position illustrated in Figure 1 or in the opened operative position illustrated in Figure 2, in a simple and efficient manner, with the utmost convenience and comfort to the user.

While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.

What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. A supporting device for an umbrella comprising, in combination, a pair of inverted U-shaped shoulder bands, an umbrella receptacle movably attached to one of said bands, means for removably securing an umbrella in said receptacle, each of said inverted U-shaped shoulder bands embodying a substantially rigid front leg, a substantially rigid rear leg, each front leg consisting of a vertical part and a rearwardly extending tenon plate, each rear leg consisting of a vertical part and a forwardly extending tenon plate, a guide with channels thereon horizontally secured between each front leg and each rear leg of each shoulder band, each tenon being received within the channels on one of said guides, vertical tab means integrally secured upon each tenon plate, a longitudinal adjustable bolt threadedly received in a threaded bore in each of said tabs secured to the tenons of said rear legs, said bolts extending through a smooth bore in each of said tabs secured to the tenons of said front legs, a pair of threaded nuts upon said bolt cooperating with the tabs secured to the tenons on the front legs for adjustably securing said first and rear legs of each shoulder band in a selected location, means on the forward end of said bolt for turning said bolts for effecting movement of each front leg relative to each rear leg of each shoulder band, a horizontally arranged brace secured between each pair of front legs and a horizonally arranged brace secured between each pair of reall egs.

2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said umbrella receptacle is normally vertically mounted with a swivel joint upon the vertical part of one of said front legs.
