w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY W. YONLEY, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
DEVICE FOR CLOSING CARRIAGE-DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,526,'dated January 29, 1884.
A Application filed September 3, 1883. (No model.)
devices for closing carr'iagedoors; and the objects of my invention are to provide a means by which the doors of carriages may be closed by the driver without leaving his box or seat. These objects I attain by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side sectional view of a car- .riagebody containing my improvements; Fig.
2, an inverted View of a carriage-body,- showing the manner in which my device isattached thereto.
Similar letters and figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A in the accompanying drawings represents the carriage-body, and A the carriage-doors, which should be attached to the carriage-body by means of spring-hinges in such a manner as to spring outward and have a tendency to hold the doors open.
To the lower ends of the doors are attached arms 0, the ends of which extend inward under the carriagebody, as shown in Fig. 2.
To the ends of the arms 0, at c, are hinged bars D. The latterare coupled at d to the lever E, which is pivoted at e to the bottom of thecarriage-body by means of a bracket.
To the lever E, .at f, is coupled a lever, F,
. which is hinged to the'carriage-body by means of the bracket G.
To the upper end of the lever F is attached an iron or steel wire rope or cord, I, which passes forward, and is attached to the foot-lever H at h, passing in its course under the rollers 1 and 4, and over rollers 2 and 3, the said rollers being arranged in such position by the driver without leaving his seat by placinghis foot on the foot-lever H and pressing forward on the same, which, by means of the cord I, draws forward the upper end of the lever F, forcing backward the lower end of the same, which, being coupled to the lever E, carries backward the end of the lever E, to which the bar D is hinged. The latter, being connected with the arm 0, swings the doors closed, which may be retained in that position by maintaining the pressure on the foot-lever H, or by providing the doors with suitable locks, latches, or catches.
' By releasing the pressure on the footlevers H, or by disengaging the fastening used for retaining the door closed, they are allowed to swing open.
Having thus fully described the manner of constructing and operating my device, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In devices for closing carriage-doors, the
combination, with the carriage-doors A, having the arm 0 attached thereto, of the bar D, lever E, the lever F, hinged'to the carriagebody, and the cord I, extending from the lever F to and attaching with the foot-lever H, substantially as set forth and described. 2. The hereinbefore-described device for closing carriage-doors, consisting of the arm 0, the bar D, the levers E and F, the cord I, the rollers 1, 2, 3, and 4, and foot-lever H, all arranged as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARVEY W. YONLEY.
