DUlVlPlNG-CART- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,442, dated March 3, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUST F. BEHRMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buena Vista, in the county of Chaffee and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Dumping-Cart, of which the following My invention relates to improvements in dump-carts which are provided with suitable mechanism whereby the end-gate of the cart may be readily opened at the front of the cart simultaneously with t-he dumping of the cart; and it consists in certain features of novelty to be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a side View of my improved dump-cart. Fig. 2 is a bottom view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is an end view.

1 represents the body of the cart, which is provided with an axle 2 and wheels 3.

4 is a swinging frame pivoted at each end of the axle and extending to the front of the cart, where it is provided with a pivoted support 5 to hold the cart in a horizontal position and off of the horse when at rest. This swinging frame is supported to the cart-body by mechanism presently to be described.

6 is the end-gate, hung at top by means of laterally-extending pins 7, projecting from braces 8 and being received by rearwardlyextending open bearings 9 at the top of the rear end of the cart. flhese pins or pivots 7 are iiattened on a plane transverse to that of the end-gate 6, so that when the gate is thrown up into vertical position it may be withdrawn from its bearing.

At each side of the body 6 are secured rearwardly-projecting hooks l0, that are engaged by the hooks 1l when the gate is shut, said hooks projecting forwardly from a rock-shaft 12, journaled in bearings 13 in' the braces 8 and in bearings 14 between the ends of the gate, said rock-shaft being operated by a downwardly-extending lever 15. The upwardly-extending end 15a of the lever 15 is thrown outwardly by a spring 16, thus causing the said hooks to normally engage each other and lock the end-gate to the body 6. The means for locking the end-gate to the body thus described is the same as that shown, described, and claimed in my patent, No.

rear cross-bar, respectively, said rod being projected normally forward by means of a coiled spring 23, having bearing at one end at 24 and engaging a collar 25 at the other end, said collar forming a part 0f said rod. Inasmuch as said spring projects said rod 20 normally forward, it will also be evident that its rear end, which is received by a recess 26 in the lower edge of the end-gate, is normally held out of contact with the lever 15 of said end-gate. The forward end vof said rod 20 is bent downwardly and formed into a bolt 27, received by bearing 23 at the front end of the bottom of the body and' normally engagA ing a recess 29, formed in the lower side of the front bar of the frame 4, thus locking the body normally to said frame. To the rear of the bearing for said bolt and formed oppositely in the top and bottom thereof are notches or recesses 30, with which engage the f forks of the bifurcated end 31 of the bellcrank lever 32, pivoted, as at 33, to the front cross-bar 34 of the body 1. The front end of the bell-crank lever 32 is engaged by the lower end of a lever 35, pivoted at 36 within a boxing 37, set into the front end of the body The front end of the bolt 27 of said rod 2O isbeveled downwardly and rearwardly, so thatfafter the body 1 has been dumped the bolt will be sprunginwardly by reason of the front bar of the frame 4 being engaged thereby, so that when the body is in position the bolt will be sprung into its recess.

At one end of lthe end-gate is a curved guide 3S, extending upwardly from a strip 30. Said guide is provided with a groove 40 to receive a cord or cable 41, secured to the rear end of said guide at 42 in a suitable manner, said cord or cable extending forwardly along one side of the body and over a pulley 43, journaled in a boxing or housing 44,

secured to the body and downwardly to the frame 4, where it is connected at one side at 4G.

From the above description, in-connection with the drawings, it will be evident that when the lever is moved in a proper direction, so as to throw the rear end of the bellcrank lever rearwardly, the bolt 27 will be withdrawn from engagement with the frame 4, thus permitting the dumping of the body. Automatically with the dumping of the body the rear end of said bolt-rod will be brought into engagement with the lever l5, thus disengaging the hooks lO and the lever, the endgate being thereby released and drawn up into a horizontal position by the action of the cable or cord 4l.

By this construction of dumping-carts I obtain a very practical and simple device, whiclrwill enable a great saving of labor, especially when used on railroads.

Having described my invention, what I claim isl. In a dump-cartI the combination of the axle supporting the body, the pivoted thillframe having a cross-bar, the longitudinallymovable spring-actuated rod having a bolt engaging a recess in said cross-bar, the endgate havinga rock-shaft provided with catches engaging' hooks upon the cart-body, and a downward-extending lever or handle lyingin the path of the longitudinally-movable rod, and a spring pressing against an upward extension of said lever or handle,substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a dump-cart, the combination of the body mounted upon the axle, the hinged endgate provided with a rock-shaft, the lockingcatches engaging hooks upon the cart-body, a springactuated lever-handle, the longitudinally-sliding rod adapted to engage the lever-handle and terminating at its front end in a beveled bolt engaging a recess in acrossbar of the thill-frame, a bell-crank lever having a forked arm engaging recesses in the longitudinally-sliding rod, and a lever pivoted upon the front end of the cart-body and adapted to engage the forwardly-extending arm of the bell-crank lever, substantially as set forth.

3. In a dump-cart, the combination, with the body of the hinged end-gate having the strip 39, provided with a curved guide 38, having groove 40, of the thill-fraine pivoted upon the axle, a guide-pulley mounted upon the side of the cart-body, and a rope or equivalent fll, attached to the curved guide 38, and passing over the guide-pulley t-o the thillfranie, where it is made fast, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
