1 Claim. (01. 298-24) 1 V This invention relates to a combined reel and barrow.
An object of this invention is to provide a wheeled barrow or container which includes an upwardly opening body having a latched closure in the front portion thereof so that the contents of the container may be selectively discharged, the container having a rearwardly extending handle between which is rotatably mounted a hose reel, and the handles also having laterally projecting brackets for holding the handles of tools which are disposed in the barrow or container.
Another object of this invention is to provide a multi-purpose article including a wheeled body having a rearwardly projecting handle on which is adapted to be detachably mounted a hose reel, and the handle having fixed thereto a pair of tool handle supporting brackets. The body is formed with a closure which is spring-pressed to closed position, being hinged at the upper edge thereof so that upon release of the latch means the weight of the material in the body will swing the door to open or discharging position.
To the foregoing objects, and others which may hereinafter more fully appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a detailed side elevation, partly broken away and in section, of a combined reel and wheel barrow.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan of the rear portion of the device.
Figure 3 is a front elevation, partly broken away and in section, of the device.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 3.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 'I-'I of Figure 4.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral II) designates generally a body or receiver which is formed of opposite side walls II, a rear wall I2, a bottom wall I3 and a front wall I4. The front wall I4 is formed with an opening at a point downwardly from the upper edge thereof which is adapted to be normally closed by means'of a spring-pressed closure I 5 hingedly mounted as at It on the lower edge of the front wall I4. A plurality of bowed springs II secured to the forward side of the front wall I4 engage the closure I5 for normally urging the latterto closed position. The closure I5 has secured to the lower edge thereof a plurality of keepers I8 which are engaged by spring-pressed latch members or bolts I9. The latch members or bolts I9 are each pivotally mounted between a pair of ears 2!] which are fixed to the bottom wall I3 at the forward portion of the latter and each latch member or bolt I9 includes a downwardly extending ear 2 I.
An elongated rod 22 is extended through the several ears 2I and is formed with an upwardly and rearwardly extending rod member 23 which is slidable through a pair of angle guide members 24 fixed to one side of the receiver III. The upper end of the rod 23 has secured thereto a rock lever or latch operator 25 which is pivotally secured as at 26 to the container or receiver Ill. The container or receiver I0 is movably mounted through the medium of a U-shaped axle 2'I having the bight 28 thereof secured by means of clamping plates 29 to a plurality of longitudinally extending and spaced apart bottom reinforcing bars 30 which are secured by fastening means 3| to the lower side of the bottom I3.
The axle 21 includes upwardly extending arms 32 extending upwardly on the outer sides of the side walls II and the arms 32 terminate in outwardly extending spindles or trunnions 33 on which wheels 34 are rotatably mounted, The container or receiver III has secured thereto a U-shaped upwardly and rearwardly extending handle 35 which has formed integral with the parallel sides 36 thereof downwardly extending extensions 31 which are fixed by fastening means 38 to the rear wall I2. The extensions 31 terminate at their lower ends in downwardly and rearwardly inclined legs 39 and the latter terminate in horizontally disposed feet 40 adapted to engage the ground for holding the container or receiver II) in substantially upright position. The parallel sides 36 of the handle 35 have disposed therebetween a hose reel III. The hose reel 4I includes a shaft 42 which is rotatably and removably mounted in L-shaped bearing members 43 which are formed with upper base members 44 secured by fastening means 45 to the lower sides of the parallel arms 36. The lower side or arm 46 of each L-shaped member 43 is spaced downwardly from the base 44 so that the reel shaft 42 may be disengaged from the bearing 3 or support 43 by upward and rearward movement of the shaft 42. The vertical side 41 of the L-shaped member 43 is disposed forwardly and as the arms 36 normally incline downwardly and forwardly the shaft 42 will be retained in the open bearing formed of the L-shaped member 43. A pair of U-shaped bracket members 48 are secured to the upper sides of the parallel members 36 and are adapted to be engaged by the handles of garden tools which are extended forwardly and downwardly into the container or receiver l0. The U-shaped members 48 include a vertical inner bar 49 which is secured by fastening means 50 to an attaching plate 51. The
attaching plate 5| is secured by meansof the fastening members 45 to the side members 36. The
latch members l9 are adapted to be constantly urged to latching position by 'means of springs 52 which are secured to the reinforcing bars "33 and engage the ears 2 i.
-- In the use and operation of this device there- .iceiver or container 10 comprising the wheel barrow may have any desired material disposed therein such as leaves, dirt or the like and when it is desired to discharge the material from the receiver l0, latch operating lever 25 is rocked downwardly and forwardly thereby swinging the latch members 9 to released position. The
pressure of the material in the receiver or conminer 10 will swing closure to an open position. If desired, the hose reel 41 may be retained on the handle 35 during'the use of the container or receiver I0 but if the hose is not to be used the reel 4!, may be easily and quickly removed by moving the-reel upwardly and rearwardly to disengage the shaft 42 from the supporting members 43.
Iclaim:
A wheelbarrow comprising a container, wheels rotatably mounted beneath said container, said container being formed .of upwardly divergent arcuate front and rear walls, parallel side walls, and a flat bottom wall, a downwardlyopening closure hingedly carried by said front wall, bowed leaf spring means secured to said container adjacent the hinge portion of said closure yieldably urging said closure to closed position, a plurality of keepers fixed to the bottom of said closure, a plurality of spring pressed latch members adapted to engage said keepers, a transverse shaft rockably carrying said latch members secured to said container, a rod extending from said shaft along one of said side walls, an operating lever rockably carried by one side wall and connected to said rod, a handle for said container, said handle comprising a single unitary tubular member formed of a transverse central --r-row, arcuate portions conforming in configuration to said rear wall depending from said last mentioned portions along opposite sides of said arcuate rearwall, each of said arcuate portions terminating in a rearwardly extending downwardly inclined leg portion, which last mentioned portions in turn terminate in substantially horizontal extremities to form a support for .said barrow, and means securing said arcuate portions to said rear wall.
