H. P. SWENSBN.
Y WAGON END GATE. .No. 292,385. Patented Jan. 22, 1884.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANS P.-SWENSEN, OF RAOINE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO MITCHELL, LEWIS & (30., OF SAME PLACE.
WAGON E-ND-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,385, dated January 22, 1884.
Application filed October 22,1883. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HANS P. SWENSEN, of
Racine, in the county of Racine, and in the applied. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same,
, gate B is held in place.
and Figs. 3 and 4 show details.
A A are the sides of the wagon-box, on the rear end of which are properly fastened the gate-posts a, a, a, and a between which the p The gate-post a is made thicker than the others, and its inside rear edge forms a shoulder, 0, against which the notched end 12 of the gate B may rest, without filling the space between said post a and the shutting-post a. The opposite end, I), of said gate B has its inside edge rouhded,to allow of its being inserted between the gate-posts a and a without strain, and of its swinging therein until the end I) has cleared post a, to rest against post a. Said gate Bis maintained in its place by means of the movable metal plate 0. This is provided with the inclined slots 0 o, in each of which is inserted a round bolt, e, secured in said gate B by nut e", in the center of said plate- O,which is widened A round-ended slot, D,,is formed, wherein works the circular base 0 of the handle-plate E, and a lug, h, formed in the rim of said base 6, is inserted through said gate B, and is loosely held therein by a nut screwing on its threaded end, thus securing to the handle-plate E an eccentric bearing against the sides of the slot D. A metal plate, d, is embedded in the outside face of said gate B, to secure a smooth bearingbase for the sliding ,lock-plateO.
From the above description the manipulation of my improved gate is readily understood. The end b of the gate being first bodily inserted between the gate-posts a and of, the notched end b is pushed in its place against the shoulder a of post a. The handle F of the eccentric-bearing-plate E being then in the position indicated by the dotted lines of Fig.
1, the lower edge of the slot D is up close to-the lug h, on which said handle-plate E is eccentrically pivoted. By lowering the handle F to the point shown by the full lines of the drawings, the rim of the circular base 6 will push down the plate 0 asit works against the lower edge of said slot D, and, as said plate 0 has to follow thedirection which its slots 0 a receive from the bolts 6, the gap left between the gate end I) and the side A of the wagonbox is filled by said plate 0, which now rests against the inside face of the shutting-post a. By lifting the handle, said plate 0 is brought to ,the position shown by the dotted lines, and the gate is freed from the shutting-post a.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters o Patent,'is I 1. In an end-gate for wagons, a sliding plate provided with two inclined slots, through which project bolts from said gate, and having between samea horizontal slot, in which works the circular base of a handle that is eccentrica-lly pivoted in said gate, whereby as said gate is inserted between the posts it is-mainhave hereunto set my hand, at Racine, in the 7 county of Racine and State of WVisconsin, in the presence'of two witnesses. j
