Beit known that I, JOHN SrErHnNsoN, of
the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain. Improvements in Car-Axle Boxes, of which the following is a specication.
My improvement consists of a shell for caraxle boxes especially adapted for use in connection with necked axles secured by key check-plates, as fully described herinafter and as fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a longitudinal section of anaxlebox, showing its connection with the axle, pedestal, car, and guard-arm, and illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of the box.
My improved axle-box shell A will vary somewhat inform and dimensions, according to circumstances. As shown in the drawings, it has vertical grooves x in the side walls for receiving .a forked check-plate, B, the axle being prolonged so as to form a neck or channel, a, near the outer end, to receive the said plate, whereby the longitudinal movement of the box and axle independently of each other is prevented.
In order to accommodate the increased length of axle resulting from the construction above described, the front wall, t', is curved outward beyondl the line which it. would otherwise occupy, as shown in `Fig. 2, and the cap C is hung at the topl by an open-jointed hinge consisting of a curved lip, p, fitting a slot in`- the c'ap, so as to be easily removable, and is sprung and held by the boit E, so as to fit closely to the curved edges of the sides, covering the opening in the box and projecting at an angle over and above the axle. The bulged form of the front of the box not only affords room forthe neck of the axle, but also presents a rounded surface, so that the box will glance off from objects that it may strike, thus preventing injuries that would otherwise result from contact with such objects. The limbs of the check plate extend into the grooves .r and downward into the oil-well, so that the fluttering of the platel in its grooves squirts the oil upward against the inclined face of the box-cover, by which it is deflected into a basin, y, at the top of a bearing, l), from whence it runs through openings w onto the journal. 3. An axle-box shell having a curved front end, and provided with a cover plate or cap hinged at the upper end to the box and curved so as to bend its bearing under the actionv of the clamping-bolt, substantially as described.`
4., An axle-box provided withgrooves for a key check-plate adapted to a grooved axle, adapted to receive a bearing having a basin at the upper side, and a curved cap arranged to deflect the oil into the basin, substantially as set forth. p
5. vA car-axle` box provided with a cap,the upper part of which extends over the checkplate, and the lower part of the cap passes down outside of front wall, the cap having a ledge or lip at its inner side covering the up-v per edge of the front wall, as and for thepurposes described.
