CAR-AXLE BOX.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 437,375, dated September 30, 1890.

Be it known that I, EDWARD BEST, a citizen of Canada, residing at Carleton Place, in the county of Lanark, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Axle Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the oil-vessels of car-axle boxes, and is embodied in the hereinafter-described improvement upon my previous inventions, which were covered by United States patents numbered 418,487 and 426,904, and in which the under surface of the removable top of the oil-vessel is simply a plain rounded surface without any projections whatever, and it has been found that the sucking power of the moving surface of the axle in its bearing is to some extent rendered inoperative by the air which is drawn in with the oil, and therefore the perfect lubrication of the axle has not been attained by either of said patented devices.
The object of my present invention is to exclude the air from the oil that is drawn upon the axle and insure a copious supply of oil to the working-surface. I attain this object by means of an inverted trough attached to the under surface of the, removable top of the oil-vessel, its two sides which run parallel with the axle being splayed outward and downward and extending to near the bottom of the vessel. 7 r
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an under side view of the removable top of the oil-vessel. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 00 0c.
The removable top A is supported by a cleat B, which may either be cast integral with the body 0 or secured to its walls by rivets or otherwise.
The inverted trough above mentioned is composed of the sloping sides D and ends E. These are soldered or otherwise closely fixed Serial No. 356,856. (No model.)

Owing to the continual jarring of axle-boxes while running, the oil in them is generally considerably aerated at or near its surface; but as only the oil in the lower part of the vessel can enter the trough by passing under the lower edges of its sides and ends it is evident that the use of this inverted trough will completely prevent the induction of air with the oil to the axle-bearing.
In my United States patent, No. 418,487, the lower portion of the outer wall of the axlebox is made integral with its bottom and sides, the upper part being covered by a hinged door, and in my United States patent, No. 426,904, this lower portion is made removable, the upper portion being covered by a sliding door. In this invention I make the lower portion of this outer Wall in one piece with the rest of the axle-box and cover the upper portion with a door sliding in grooves formed in the sides, as shown in Fig. 4. To prevent any chance of this door being lost or mislaid, I attach it by a chain G to a lug H,
cast on the axle-box. A spring-latch. I holds the door down in place.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The improved oil-vessel for a caraxle, having its top formed with the bearing-surface adapted to be maintained in contact with the bearing-surface of the axle, the said top being provided on its under side with the depending spout communicating with the bearing-surface of the top through opening F.
2. A removable oil-vessel for a car-axle box, having attached to the under surface of its top side an inverted trough composed of the downwardly and outwardly sloping sides D and ends E, substantially as herein shown and described.
