' UNITED STATES LEVI BowERs, on MARTINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA;
PATENT CFFI E.
VSTRAW-STAGKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,279, dated January '22, 1884.
" Application filedNovember 17, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVIBOWRRS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Martinsburg, in'the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Straw-Stackers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of the invention, and is a side elevation. Fig.
2 is arear elevation of the separator, the strawcarrier being shown in longitudinal section; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the hinge of one ofthe carrier-rails.
This invention has relation to straw-stack ers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, a designates the thrashing-machine, to which the improved side stacker is removably attached. The sill b of the stacker is connected to the sill e of the thrasher by a hook, c, on its under face, said hook c engaging a stud or screw, (1, on the under face of the sill e. Abrace-rod, f, connects the sill b with the top cross-bar, g, of the thrasher, and a brace-rod, h, connects it with the sill e of the thrasher, and a stop, 12, isremovably secured to the outside of the sill e of the thrasher, to prevent, in connection vwith the brace-rods, lateral movement of the stacker. At therear end of the thrasher, and just above the sills e e, a shaft, t, provided with a miter-gear wheel, 13, near each end, is' journaled. in boxes 1%, and has a pulley, i at one end. Thelower leys, as in the ordinary carrier.
a n hinged together on their under sides, so that they may be folded, for a purpose hereinafter explained. The side rails of the lower section of the carrier-frame are provided at their lower ends with bearing-arms 0, which engage the carrier-shaft it outside of the boxes Z Z, and are removable therefrom. The meetingends of thev side rails, 12 p, are beveled on the under edges, to permit a partial folding of the sections a n to be made, toremove the carrier-frame from the endless carrier when the stacker is to be changed from the right to the left, or vice versa. The upper section, a", carries the carrier-shaft and pulside rails of the carrier are provided with eyebolts (1 q, for the passage of the hoisting-rope which passes also through eyes r 1 on the top of the thrashing-machine, and is connected'to the ordinary Windlass, r", on the machine. A shaft and spool, 8, work in bearings s at the rear of the machine, and an end less web or apron runs over this spool and a spool on the shaft 2', and carries the chaff to the stacker. 7
To change the stacker from a right-hand discharge to a left-hand discharge, the sill I) must be removed, together with the brace rods and stop to the sill 'e, and the brace-rods and stop applied to that side of the machine. This changewillbring the miter-gear m into The upper engagement with the miter-gear t nearest the pulley i which is run by a belt from the main shaft of the'thrashing-machine. The hinged carrier-frame is first removed from the endless slat carrier, and, when the sill has been shifted, is again applied to the lower carriershaft and extended withinthe endless slat car- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
LEVI BOWERS.
