ENDLESS TRAVELING GONVEYBR.
I (No Model.)
U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IRA HERMAN GAITHER, OFALBERTON, MARYLAND.
ENDLESS TRAVELING CONVEYER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,229, dated December 29, 1891.
Application filed June 13, 1891. Serial No. 396,152. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA HERMAN GAITHER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Alberton, in the county of Howard and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Endless Traveling Oonveyers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain improvements in endless traveling conveyers; and it consists in the novel combination and arrange ment of parts as hereinafter set forth, illustrated by the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my invention as embodied, for instance, in connection with the grain-carrier of a harvester. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 a cross-sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the conveyer.
In carrying out my invention I construct the conveyers A A, of which one is arranged horizontally and the other vertically, each of plate-sections A of a length equal to the width of the proposed conveyer. and hinged or articulated together at their longitudinal edges, forming substantially an imperforate endless conveyer wholly of plate metal. These conveyers encompass polygonal sprocketwheels B B, preferably octagonal in their general outline, whose short teeth engage two series of aligning apertures or perforations a in the plate-section A, arranged near the ends of said plate-sections to impel or actuate said conveyers. The sprocket-wheels B are carried by spindles or shafts b, suitably journaled in supports or side pieces 0, forming serving to cover the apertures or perforations in the plate-sections to prevent the grain carried upon the conveyers fallingtherethrough. By this arrangement and construction of parts the employment of rolls as requiredin connection with the use of the canvas or cloth conveyers and the objectionable sagging attendant upon such use are avoided, while durability is promoted and greater carrying capacity secured, and the use of additional driving chain or link belts is dispensed with, the conveyers herein employed also serving that purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination, with the polygonal sprocket-wheels, of the endless conveyer comprising the hinged or articulated plate-sections, having therein series of apertures or perforations near their ends engaged by the short teeth of said wheels, said plate-sections being armed with cleats or-slats covering said apertures orperforations, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IRA HERMAN GAITI-IER. Witnesses:
HARRY M. GAITHER, STEPHEN R. Hones.
