- H B. DODGE. SPRING HINGEHV No 292,210. Patent d-M2522. 1884.
UNITED," STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY B. DODGE, OF EAST SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPRING-HINGE."
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,210, dated January 22, 1884.
' Application filed October 6, 1888. (No model.)
' scription, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
My invention relates to a hinge of that class in which a spring is employed, in connection with the parts of the hinge, to retain the same in definite positions with relation to one another, thus keeping the door, blind, gate, or article supported on the hinge in a definite position with relation to its frame without the use of a fastening device.
My invention consists in details of construction of the parts for holding the spring, and in the arrangement of the parts of the hinge with relation to one another, as hereinafter set forth. 7
Figure l is a horizontal section of a hinge and a portion of the framework ofa building and window-blind in connection with which it is used, and Fig. 2 an elevation thereof.
The main portion or stationary member of the hinge, intended to befastened upon the stationary frame-work A, as herein shown, upon the outside of the window-frame of a building, consists of a fastening-plate, a, pro vided with lugs a, between which is pivoted the other member, I), of the hinge. The plate a also has supports a a for the ends of the spring a, which bears laterally between its ends on the movable member of the hinge. The spring-support a consists of a bridge connecting the lugs to, which project laterally from the hinge-pivot for this purpose. The said springsupports a a" also operate as stops to limit the movement of the other or movable member, I), of the hinge in either direction. The member 1) consists of an arm having an attaching-plate, 12, (shown in this instance as at right angles to the arm, adapted to be screwed upon the rear edge of the blind, the said plate being offset toward one side of the pivot e, as shown, so that the blind or movable pieceB will lie in different but parallel planes when the blind is in the entirely closed and entirely open positions, and shown in full and dotted lines, respectively, Fig. l. The sides of the arm 6 are flattened, as shown at 2 and 3, so that the spring a, resting against the said flattened portions, resists the rotary movement of the said arm, thus tending to hold the blind Bin either position, opened or closed, without the need of any additional fastening. A considerable positive pressure upon the blind will, however, cause the spring 0 to yield, thus enabling the blind to be opened or closed when desired. If desired, the end of the arm may also be flattened, as at 4, so that the spring 0 will tend to hold it in a position at right angles, or at any other desired angle, to the frame A. The spring 0 consists of a flat plate of steel or equivalent elastic mate rial, and the projection of and bridge a are slightly recessed, so that the spring may be dropped .into place before the arm b of the hinge is connected with the other member of the hinge, and the said spring will then be kept in place by its own elastic force, no fz'istening being required to hold'it.
- The portion of the lugs a that extends toward the bridge a is cut away on its under side to pass over the usual molding surrounding the window-frame.
- I claim A hinge composed of the stationary mem her, which consists of the fastening-plate a,having the lugs a and supports a and a and the spring 0, supported upon the said supports a and a", combined with the pivoted member I), having the fastening-plate b and plane surfaces 2, 3, and at, to be acted upon by the spring, whereby the blind, door, or other movable part is held in different positions, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses.
HENRY B. DODGE.
