SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,152, dated January 22, 1884.
" Application filed October 15,1883. (No model.)
T aZZ whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, AUGUST ARENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to that class of sash-fasteners which have a hinged latch se- IO cured to the sweep, and forming a part thereof; and the objects of my invention are to simplify the construction of the parts and to arrange the same so that they shall be convenient and easy to operate, and so that there I 5 will be no liability of the mortise with which the latch-lever engages to become filled with dirt and clogged. I attain these objects by the simple construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of my improved sash-fastener. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on line w w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the base-plate with the other parts detached, and Fig. 4 is a reversed plan view of the latch-lever.
The keeper A may be of any ordinary con struction, provided the rear end of the sweep B is made to conform to the keeper. The
. sweep B consists of a circular hub, a, having 0 a chamber formed therein, and provided with two ears, b b,within which is pivoted the latchlever c by means of the pin d.
C designates the base-plate,which is mainly in the form of a box-like elevation, the top of 5 which is covered by a thin plate, leaving an open chamber'upon its under side. In the top of this base-plate is formed a curved slot,
6, in which a downward projection formed upon theunder side of the sweep enters to 0 limit the motion of the sweep, as in other prior sash-fasteners of this class. The plane of section upon which'Fig. 2 is taken prevents this downward projection from being shown in said figure, and it is considered unnecessary to illustrate, because it is well known. An example of a like lug or projection, which operates in connection with a curved slot in the base-plate in the same way, may be seen in the Patent No. 263,082, August 22,1882. The pivotal post D is also secured within the baseplate C. Said base-plate has two other openings or mortises for engagement with the lug h at the inner end of the latch-lever c. Said inner end of the latch-lever is forked, so as to carry its two arms rearward to a point upon either side of the pivotal post, and tofurnish a seat for the lower end of the spring k. By depressing the outer end of the handle, the spring is depressed by means of the forked arms on the rear end of the latch, and the lug h is withdrawn from the mortise 9, so that the sweep can be swung around to one side for unlocking the sash, and when the lug comes directly over the other one of the mortises g the spring will cause it to snap into engagement therewith.
I am aware that the several features of my sash-fastener are old, when separately considered, the same being formed in various prior patents.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described sash-fastener, which consists of the sweep B, having chambered hub a, ears I) b, the latch-lever c, pivoted at d, and provided with the lug h and forked rear end, the base-plate C, having mortises e g g, the pivotal post D, and the spring k, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
AUGUST ARENS. I
