1 Claim. (Cl. 254-26) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in claw hammers and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a tool of this character which is particularly adapted to pull long as well as short nails with minimum effort and without marring the work.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide an improved claw hammer of the character described which may be readily use for nail pulling and ripping.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an improved claw hammer of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an improved claw hammer constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section through the head, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a head of suitable metal which is designated generally by reference character 4. The head 4, which may also be of any desired dimensions, is mounted on one end portion of a conventional handle 5.
The head 4 includes an elongated eye 6 for the reception of the handle -5. Formed integrally with the .forward portion of the eye 6 is a poll 7. The periphery 8 of the poll 7 is substantially flush with the upper or outer end 9 of the eye 6.
13 of the eye 6.
Integral braces in the form of rockers 14 are provided for the claw 10. The rockers 14 extend from the forward end portion of the eye 6 to the outer or free end portlons of the claw fingers 11 with which said rockers merge and between said eye 6 and said free end portions are spaced from said fingers. The inner ends of the rockers 14 are flush with the forward end 9 of the eye 6.
It is thought that the use of the tool will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the claw 10 is engaged beneath the heads of nails to be extracted in an obvious manner. The tool is then rocked on the members 14 for pulling the nail. The construction and arrangement of the head 4 is such that long nails may be readily pulled without the necessity for inserting a block between the tool and the work. The relatively short, slightly curved claw 10 also adapts the tool for ripping off boards, etc.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A tool of the character described comprising: a hammer head including an elongated eye for the reception of one end portion of a handle, a claw integral with the rear end portion of the eye, said claw including short, curved fingers comprising free ends substantially in the plane of the rear end of the eye, and integral curved rockers extending between the free end portions of the fingers and the forward end portion of the eye and terminally merging with the free end portions of said fingers in the plane of the rear end of the eye, whereby to provide a short claw and rockers of slight curvature with the rockers extending to the free ends of said fingers.
