BRSSIERES Filed NOV. 20, 1958 /NVENTOR I m maa-L Gmcms f'f/ 7 Wok/vvs United States Patent O BRASSIERES Marcel Gingras, Quebec, Quebec, Canada, assignor to Dominion Corset Company Limited, Quebec, Quebec, Canada Application November 20, 1958, Serial No. 775,237
1 Claim. (Cl. 128-489) This invention relates to improvements in brassieres.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a comfortable fitting brassiere in which the wast band underlying and joined to the breast pocket sections is designed to permit the brassiere to follow movements of the wearer Without riding up on the body of the wearer or subjecting the wearer to the sensation of compression.
More particularly, the invention consists, essentially, in the provision of a brassiere in which the breast pocket sections are joined to an underlying Waist band consisting of full length upper and lower wast band sections having different characteristics, the lower wast band section being made of inelastic material and the upper wast band section being made of one-way stretch elastic material sewn in place so that the direction of stretch thereof is in the vertical direction of the garment or mainly so. The ability of the brassiere to follow movements of -the wearer without riding up on the body of the wearer or subjecting the wearer to the sensation of compression is enhanced by reason of the fact that the two portions of the waist band underlying each breast pocket section have their adjacent longitudinally extending edges joined together along a line of juncture having substantially the configuration of a wide V. This configuration of the line of juncture between the upper and lower sections of the wast band pennits the breast pockets to have limited lateral, as well as vertical, movement without uncomfortable restraint or displacement or riding-up of the lower section of the wast band.
Proceeding now to a more detailed description of the invention, reference Will be had to the accompanying drawing, in which the single figure, Figure 1, is a front elevational view of a brassiere embodying the invention and shows the brassiere as it appears in a substantially flattened condition.
As shown in this drawing, my improved brassiere comprises breast pocket sections 5 which may be of any desired or conventional construction and may be joined together at the center of :the brassiere in any approved fashion. The breast pockets 5 are formed with convexly curved lower edges Sa which are joined to complementary concavely curved upper edges 6 of a waistband, generally indicated at 7.
The waistband 7 extends entirely across the front of the brassiere to the outer side edges of the breast pocket sections 5. The outer edge of the breast pocket section 5 and the end edges of the Waist band 7 are joined to side members 8 which are adapted to be extended around the sides and back of the body of the wearer and fastened together at their ends by any suitable fastening means,
ICC
such, for example, as the hook members 9 and the eye members 10 diagrammatically indicated in the drawings.
As previously indicated, the main feature of the invention resides in the construction of the wast band 7 which, as here shown, consists of full length upper and lower sections respectively indicated at 12 and 13. The upper waistband section 12 is composed of material, usually referred to as one-Way stretch materiaL which is elastically stretchable in one direction and is relatively non-stretchable in the other direction. This upper waistband section 12 is sewn in place so that, as indicated by the arrows 14, its direction of stretch is in the verticalv direction of the garment or mainly so. The lower wast band section 13 is made of inelastic material which is relatively non-stretchable in either the vertical or circumferential direction of the garment. This lower waist band section 13 may be made of lace or any' other ordinary or suitable material which is relatively non-stretchable.
The adjacent longitudinal edges of the two wast band sections 12 and 13 are shaped and joined together to provide, beneath each of the breast pocket sections 5, a line of juncture 16 which has substantially the configuration of a wide shallow V. As previously stated, the vertical stretch characteristics of the upper waist band section 12 serve, in conjunction with the particular configuration of the line of juncture between the wast band sections 12 and 13, to permit the garment to follow all movements of the wearer without riding up on the body of the wearer or subjecting the wearer to the sensation of compression.
In applying this invention to different types of brassieres, the dimensions of the component sections of the wast band, such, for example, as the vertical dimensions of different portions of the upper wast band section 12 may be varied to ensure the desired eifect of comfort, balance and free movement without danger of the garment riding up on the body'of the wearer. The same also applies to the vertical dimensions of the lower waist band section 13.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows. v
I claim:
A brassiere, including breast pocket sections having their lower edges joined to a' waistband consisting of upper and lower waistband sections of different characteristics, the upper waistband section being made of elastically stretchable one-way stretch material sewn in place so that the direction of stretch thereof is in the vertical direction of the garment, or mainly so, and the lower waistband section being made of material which is relatively non-stretchable in both the vertical and circumferential directions of the garment, said portions of the upper and lower sections of the waistband underlying each breast pocket having their adjacent longitudinal edges joined together along a line of juncture' having substantially the 'configuration of a wide V so that the greatest vertical stretch of said upper section is from the point of the V to a point thereabove along the juncture of the breast pocket and said upper section.
