Description

March 16, 1965 H. STEINER GARMENT WITH UPLIFT BREAST SUPPORT Filed Dec. 17, 1962 FIG] nun" "mum FIG.2
7 Hfrry Sfeiner ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,173,421 GARMENT WITH UPLIFT BREAST SUPPORT Harry Steiner, 130-14 Cronston Ave., Belle Harbor, NY. Filed Dec. 17, 1962, Ser. No. 245,306 3 Claims. (Cl. 128-485) The present invention relates to a garment and more particularly to a garment having added uplift breast support.
An important feature of brassieres, corselettes, and the like is the uplift breast support they afford to the wearer. One way in which manufacturers have sought to increase the uplift is to provide an extra piece of material, or collar, across the base of the breast cup. However, it has been found that when the breast cup is drawn in an upward direction the collar tends to fall forward, away from the body. Naturally, the control action is ineffective at this time. In addition, a bulky line results from the wayward material.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a garment which will overcome the foregoing drawbacks.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a collar for a breast cup which may be readily incorporated into existing garment designs.
Additional features and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description and drawing, in which: a
FIG. 1 is a plan view, partially broken away, of a brassiere garment according to the present invention; and
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the inside of the garment of FIG. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the invention has been illustrate-d as applied to a long-line brassiere. The brassiere has two substantially identical sides and 12. Each of the sides 10 and 12 has a front section 14 with a breast cup 16 defined by a seam at its bottom edge 17, and a diaphragm portion 18. The two sides 10 and 12 are joined along a first seam 20 at the vertical ce-nterline of the garment. A side panel 22 is attached along a second seam 24 to the outer edge of the front section 14. A back panel 26 is likewise attached to the outer edge of the side panel 22. Fastening means, such as hooks 28 and eyes 29 are provided to close the garment. Shoulder straps 30 may be added in the usual manner. A horizontally extensible band 32 is attached along the bottom edge of the garment.
In the brassiere shown, the back and side panels, as well as the lateral section 34 of the diaphragm portion 18, are made of a horizontally extensible material. The central section 36 of the diaphragm portion 18 is made of a non-extensible material.
Attention is now drawn to the breast cup 16 which has three parts. Across the top of the cup 16 is a top section 38 made of a non-extensible material, such as net. The lower part of the cup 16 may be divided into a lateral lower section 40 and an inner lower section 42. The two lower sections 40 and 42 are attached to the top section 38 along a generally horizontal cup seam 44. Means are provided for vertical extensibility of the breast cup 16, For example, the lower sections 40 and 42 may be made of a vertically extensible material, as shown.
A collar having two portions 46 and 48 is arranged in criss-cross fashion on the outer face of the garment at the bottom of the breast cup 16. Each of the collar portions 46 and 48 is made of a non-extensible material and is of generally triangular configuration. The apex of the first triangle 46 is attached at the lower edge of the outer side of the cup within the seam 24 and its base is attached to the inner end of the cup seam 44. The apex of the 3,173,421 Patented Mar. 16, 1965 second triangle 48 is attached at the bottom edge of the breast cup with its base attached to the outer side of the cup at its lower section within the seam 24 and also to the outer end of the cup seam 44. The lower side of each of the triangles 46 and 48 is attached at the bottom edge 17 of the breast cup. The upper side of each of the triangles is left free so that the material forming the breast cup may extend with bodily movement.
The criss-cross arrangement of the collar portions 46 and 48 keeps the collar close to the breast cup 16 even when the cup is subjected to stretching and twisting. Since the collar retains its position and does not fall forward, it provides continuous uplift control.
Although the invention has been illustrated on a brassiere it can equally well be applied to corselettes, hal-ters, and other similar garments.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described in detail to illustrate the application of the invention, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.
What is claimed is:
1. A garment comprising a breast cup having means for vertical extensibility and a collar of non-extensible material and having two portions of generally triangular configuration arranged in criss-cross fashion on the outer face of the garment so that the apex of the first triangle is attached at the lower edge of the outer side of the breast cup with its base attached to the inner side of the breast cup at its lower edge and the apex of the second triangle is attached at the bottom edge of the breast cup with its base attached at the bottom edge of the breast cup at its lower edge, the lower side of each of said triangles being attached to the bottom edge of the breast cup to overlie the bottom of said breast cup, the upper side of each of said triangles being left free, said arrangement providing continuous uplift control while permitting vertical freedom of motion.
2. A garment comprising a breast cup having a top portion and a bottom portion connected along a generally horizontal seam at the approximate center of said breast cup, said bottom portion having means for vertical extensibility, and a collar of non-extensible material having two portions of generally triangular configuration arranged in criss-cross fashion on the outer face of the garment so that the apex of the first triangle is attached at the lower edge of the outer side of the breast cup with its base attached to the inner end of the said cup seam and the apex of the second triangle is attached at the bottom edge of the breast cup with its base attached to the outer side of the breast cup at its lower edge and to the outer end of the cup scam, the lower side of each of said triangles being attached to the bottom edge of the breast cup to overlie the bottom of said breast cup, the upper side of each of said triangles being left free, said arrangement providing continuous uplifht control while permitting vertical freedom of motion.
3. A garment having a front section with a breast cup and a diaphragm portion having a lateral section of horizontally extensible material and a central section of nonextensible material, said breast cup having a top portion and a bottom portion connected along a generally horizontal seam at the approximate center of said breast cup, said top portion being of non-extensible material, said bottom portion being of vertically extensible material, and a collar of non-extensible material having two portions of generally triangular configuration arranged in crisscross fashion on the outer face of the garment so that the apex of the first triangle is attached at the lower edges of the outer side of the breast cup with its base attached to the inner end of the said cup seam and the apex of References Cited by the Examiner the second triangle is attached at thetbottom edge oi tie UNITED STATES PATENTS breast cup with its base attached to t e outer si e 0 t e breast cup at its lower edge and to the outer end of the 2,222,687 11/40 RPSeHthaI et a1 128 '483 cup seam, the lower side of each of said triangles being 5 2919698 1/60 G1 ngras, 128-489 attached to the bottom edge of the breast cup to overlie 2923301 2/60 D1 T111110 128484 the bottom of said breast cup, the upper side of each of 3056411 10/62 Child 128 489 said triangles being left free, said arrangement providing continuous uplift control while permitting vertical free- DELBERT LOWE P'lmary Examuwr' dom of motion. 10 ADELE M.
